SUC: Sandy Denny Goes To The Basement

Posted over 2 years ago
Fairport Convention always had a really nice line in Dylan covers - that French version of "If You Gotta Go, Go Now" and the sublime "Percy's Song" from the second album. Sandy Denny continued the tradition on her first solo album "The North Star Grassman and the Ravens." Clearly she and the band were in what the British music magazines sometimes call "an advanced state of refreshment" when they recorded this little gem from "The Basement Tapes." It's easily one of the few light moments on an otherwise somewhat brooding - though lovely, in a Nick Drake-ish way - piece of work.

  2. Spike says I heard she was good. Now I've heard her; she is good. Wonderful, in fact. Two different songs with two different sounds. Keepers, both. Like Post.

  3. dermahrk says Hey, guys...I really don't like the acronym SUC. Doesn't exactly inspire listening. The tune is nice. Funkier than I would expect from Fairport Convention (I just now avoided the FC acronym!). The few things I've heard of theirs have always been too too twee and folky. This sounds more like the Band. Spike, is that Dave Steven's Rocketeer I'm a-lookin' at?

  4. deadmandeadman says Bill, I like this, and I agree with Mark, it captures some of the smokey ambience of Basement Tapes-era Band sessions without aping the approach. Delightfuly relaxed with genuine rough edges and a 'shit, this is fun' feel, it captures immediately and rewards nicely. The man from Ivyland hits another one out.

  5. Spike says dermahrk, yes. So now apparently this Dave Steven created him. Did ivylander mention SUC somewhere?

  9. scotfree says Those are very nice. I hear the Band reference but "Flood"also smacks of Little Feat, for me at least. Thanks!
