Saturday Night Live - An artist paints

Posted over 1 year ago

On February 1st, 1973, Randy Newman sat down with producer Russ Titelman to explain his concept for his next album. It was to be a crucifiction of the post-depression south. Listening to an artist "paint" Just so cool...especially for those who only associate Newman with movie sound tracks (Toy Story) - at one time he was as outspoken as any singer/songwriter who plied his trade.

I got here later, nyah nyah nyah!

These are (not surprisingly) great.  Just hearing his voice when he starts to sing makes me smile.  It's such a comforting voice and it makes you feel like you are about to hear something funny (which often you are), even when he is covering a very serious topic.

I love the way he explains the stories behind the songs here.....where did you get this?

"Randy Newman Live" was chosen for "Mama Told Me Not To Come," but has remained somewhere in my moldy LP collection for the rest of the songs. This Randy+piano+orchestra recording reminds me of day-into-evening concerts of the 1970's, especially the Diamond Head Crater Festival/Celebration. "Maybe I'm Doing It Wrong," but it sure does "Tickle Me" more than a "Political Science" lecture about the "Yellow Man."
