I had heard from a friend that this dude was inspired by Stephen Stills and so I went looking about to see what validity there was to that, and sure enough:
From the Wik:
Raymond Charles "Ray" LaMontagne is an American folk singer-songwriter who, up until the summer of 2007, lived in Wilton, Maine. His current residence is a farm just outside of Farmington, Maine. Lamontagne has two sons with his wife. After hearing a Stephen Stills song, he decided to quit his job at a shoe factory and pursue a career in music. He has since released three albums, Trouble, Till the Sun Turns Black and Gossip in the Grain. In the UK, Trouble was a top 5 hit, and the title track of the album was a top 25 hit. Till the Sun Turns Black was a top 40 hit in the US. A soft-spoken person who is known for his raspy voice, LaMontagne has won a number of awards for his music and has performed at several charity events.
I'm really liking his stuff so far and thought I'd share.

Thanks for sharing this, I didn't know that the story with Stephen Stills but have had him on my playlist since his last album.
I bought his debut based on the incessant buzz about him. I have to say I was singularly disappointed.
This sounds much better.
thats right my alley, thanks for posting
