For years Cash was often at odds with his producers after he had discovered with his first producer, Sam Phillips, that his voice was better suited to a stripped down musical style. Most famously he disagreed with Jack Clement over his sound, Clement having tried to give Cash's songs a "twangy" feel and to add strings and barbershop-quartet-style singers. His successful collaboration with Rick Rubin was in part due to Rubin seeking a minimalist sound for his songs.

It seems that no matter what he sang, the outcome was somewhat melancholy. The kind of sound that made you reflect.
His was quite the adventure from start to finish.
I'd have to agree with Cash. He's more of a story teller than a big production entertainer. I Have some of his over produced stuff and I still preferr his stripped down stuff.
although I really like listening to his songs, there's something about his voice that always makes me sleepy
"The Blue Train"
I liked Cash at his leanest and meanest. He was always real and gritty and no-bullshit. Cool stuff here, rum.
Awesome, thanks!
Johnny Cash? THE Rick Rubin? Cool!!
Ditto, Mike the Knife!
