Knew Knopfler

Posted over 2 years ago

Breaking no new ground here, but there are times when it feels just right to slip on those comfortable old sneakers and know what to expect. Everything feels just right, warts and all.

I hear it, I like it - no complexity there.

'The first itinerant person I ever met would sing in soul bands in winter, then work part-time in fairgrounds or 'go pick fruit down south' when the weather turned warm,' explains Knopfler. 'I was about 15 years old, stuck in school and envious. 'Get Lucky' came from him and other traveling characters I went on to meet in places I'd find myself working short-term, like farms, warehouses, building sites, before I got lucky with my songs...

The songs are good enough I just don't like his singing or should I say the sound of his voice.

Sounds worthy enough to me. I still remember the explosion of sultans of swing and even though that time is well past he still manages to shuffle through tasteful  tunes. This is what I consider to be aging gracefully.

Well, I will say this:  I too like Knopfler's voice, and also find it soothing.  Although it doe not remind me of my mom's voice, haha!  But I've always liked Dire Straits in general.  This stuff is nice.

...Yeah...its nice.  It doesn't rock the boat in uncharted waters.  Its sorta like a ride along familiar waterways, noting the minor changes.

It's unfortunate that someone of his caliber isn't trying to forge new territory in his old age. Then again, lots of folks as they age would rather not rock the boat. But w/his prestige he could get away with it quite nicely.

I liked Dire Straits to an extent back in the day but not enough to buy their music. I have not followed Knopler since he went solo at all.

I've been streaming this on Rhapsody, pretty good stuff.   I've seen Mark a couple of times since Dire Straits and he puts on a great show.  "Saling to Philadelphia" is a good album too.

Back in the day, Dire Straits sounded fresh to me -- the first album blew me away as a teeny bobber and I loved the second record too -- Communique!  Lady Writer, Angel of Mercy, Once Upon a Time in the West -- hell, I'm going listen to it right now!

funoka- Don't you just love having Rhapsody as an extended library? I do. I think the new MOG may be something like that- can't wait to see.

I like Marks newer alt-country sound- it works for him.
