Two CDs of pioneering blues, R&B, gospel, doo-wop & soul. Highlights include John Lee Hooker's 'Boom Boom', Little Richard's 'Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin' On', Gene Chandler's 'Duke Of Earl', Betty Everett's 'The Shoop Shoop Song (It's In His Kiss)', The Dells' 'Oh What A Nite', Jerry Butler's 'Make It Easy On Yourself' & many more. 50 tracks.

Chicago's Vee Jay Records was the most successful African-American owned and operated record company before Motown. founded in 1953 by Vivian Carter (the "Vee") and her husband, Jimmy Bracken (the "Jay"), Vee Jay contributed a tremendous legacy of blues, rhythm and blues, doowop, jazz and Soul, before its untimely demise in 1966.

    Great stuff, plus many intriguing unfamiliar cuts.  Is Billy Boy Arnold's "Rockin'itus" any good?  I love some of his other blues.

    I think this is the first time I heard the original version by John Lee. I have always liked this song, I am most familiar with the Animals version.

    I have that Beatles album Introducing The Beatles on Vee Jay. You have to read this, if the history of Vee Jay and The Beatles and the Four Seasons involvement interests you at all. It's a fascinating accounting of label wows, a label growing too fast and miscommunication.
