SPELUNK DA FUNK

A match made in (my) heaven

Posted 7 months ago

From the dregs of a (to put it kindly) "mixed reviews" film by Dennis Hopper rises (IMHO) an incredible sound track that mates John Lee Hooker and Miles Davis - yes an incredibly inspired and sonically jaw dropping (and all too brief) mating. We can also throw Taj Mahal into the mix, just for good measure.

To me, this is just an incredible tease, simply knowing it is a one off, never to be repeated.

Did I mention incredible?

1. Coming to Town - Miles Davis, Tim Drummond, John Lee Hooker, , Roy Rodgers
2. Empty Bank - Miles Davis, Tim Drummond, Taj Mahal, , Roy Rodgers
3. Harry's Philosophy - John Lee Hooker
4. Dolly's Arrival - Tim Drummond, Taj Mahal, , Roy Rodgers
5. Harry and Dolly - Miles Davis, Tim Drummond, John Lee Hooker, Taj Mahal, Roy Rodgers
6. Sawmill - Miles Davis, Tim Drummond, John Lee Hooker, Roy Rodgers
7. Bank Robbery - Miles Davis, Tim Drummond, John Lee Hooker, Taj Mahal, , Roy Rodgers
8. Moanin' Blues - John Lee Hooker
9. Gloria's Story - Miles Davis, Bradford Ellis
10. Harry Sets Up Sutton - Miles Davis, Tim Drummond, John Lee Hooker, Taj Mahal, Roy Rodgers
11. Murder - Miles Davis, Tim Drummond, John Lee Hooker, Taj Mahal, Roy Rodgers
12. Blackmail - Miles Davis, Tim Drummond, John Lee Hooker, Taj Mahal, Robert Palmer, Roy Rodgers
13. End Credits - Miles Davis, Tim Drummond, John Lee Hooker, Taj Mahal, , Roy Rodgers

One approaches this with a certain trepidation Sensei.  How do these two find common ground...but here we are deep into it.  Murky, smokey juke joint jam at two A.M.  I like it.

Yeah, what is it about trumpet and sax that provides the sexy vision? Or fantasy?

A happy serendipity. Have to track down my copy of this and play the whole thing. What an unlikely combination of musicians and musical styles, but it works, it works...

What a strange and wonderful treat! And screw the "mixed" reviews. This movie was hot and cool!

The disparate parts fit together rather well.  It's great when that happens.
