A Guide to Love, Loss & Desperation

Posted 8 months ago

These tunes are taken from their 2007 Release "A Guide to Love, Loss & Desperation" which I found to be quite an engaging listen with hints of early Who teenage angst woven in and out. Nothing too cerebral - strictly hormonal :-)

Very refreshing.

Murph, Dan and Tord met in 2003 while attending Paul McCartney's Liverpool Institute Of Performing Arts. They even received a music tutorial by Sir Paul himself and shared a stage with Ringo Starr. After meeting and forming the band, Murph reminisces on their beginnings in Liverpool; "We fiddled ourselves a gig in a place called Hannah's Bar. We used to call each other 'stupid wombats' and then we needed a name for this first gig so Dan was like 'just call us The Wombats.'" And so it began. Playing 270 live dates in 2007 alone, including apperances at festivals such as Fuji Rocks, Glastonbury and V Festival, The Wombats have become an international buzz band with a brand of hi-octane indie pop genius that will gladly back up the hype.

Musically hints at early Who but the vocals remind me more of the early punk sound.

I only ever heard the "Let's Dance to Joy Division" song. Not bad overall, I don't hear the Who references though.

@wiz & dach- perhaps I should have refined that Who reference to Quadrophenia. My initial reaction was the sense of kinship these two albums share. Vocals may be different, musically, yes there are some elements of duality but more specifically, it is the heart and soul (the "human" element) where I see the parallels.

@ Indy - hooking up with Macca wouldn't hurt!

I could hear some The Who-sounding kind of backing vocals in Where's Laura......

Overall, I think these guys sound really good!  I've heard Let's Dance to Joy Division before but did not know who sang it.

The BEGINNING of the stripper song (before his voice kicks in) sounds almost identical to Holidays in Cambodia by DKs...

And my last but certainly not least official critique of what I've heard here is........the background vocals in the stripper song sound a LOT like the Snow Patrol song Spitting Games

But seriuosly, nice and informative post---I've learned something new about love, loss and desperation, too-
