Track:Intro (Advice)

Animal Serenade features Lou Reed onstage in Los Angeles at the Wiltern Theatre in 2003. The show features a drummer-less band (including Mike Rathke on guitar/synth, bassist Fernando Saunders and the cello of Jane Scarpantoni) and Reed delivers dramatic readings of some of his most compelling work. In addition, Antony Hegarty, of Antony and the Johnsons fame, contributes background vocals throughout and sings the lead on "Set The Twilight Reeling" and "Candy Says."
Highlights include
--"How Do You Think it Feels," which starts with a fine, feedback-laden guitar solo and ends with a driving rhythm-guitar shuffle and burn worthy of 1969 Live.
--"Street Hassle," on which Jane Scarpontoni on Cello, Lou and Mike Rathke hit a sublime groove. I wish they had played all of the movements, however.
--"Venus in Furs" with an insane Cello solo--not quite as powerful as seeing Jane straddle and attack the instrument live, but unbelievable nonetheless
--"Sunday Morning": "All those wasted years so close behind" sounds so much sadder and profounder from a 61 year-old Lou, who sings his heart out on this song.
--"Set the Twilight Reeling": an amazing song given the treatment it deserves.

Lou Reed is such a magnificent enigma
Yeah, I think this effort is under-rated. Can't recall if this live recording or another recent issue has Professor Reed explaining how an extra chord formed the riff for Walk on the Wild Side...
Thanks for that, made the morning's humdrum much less hum. and, of course, there was already no drum.
Lou and his music are always welcome. Nice to get reacquainted.
Absolutely. I like how he distinguishes the 3 from 4 chord riff ---in a weird way it reminds me of Vanilla Ice explaining how different his "ice Ice Baby" melody was SO different from Bowie and Freddy Mercury's "Under Pressure"
ahahaha! Believe me, that was not meant as an insult to Lou. Actually, I meant the exact opposite.
So, do we get an explanation on the furry, bewhiskered quadreped! or do I have to get Lou to go down there and excoriate you for dissing him??
Haha!! I was NOT dissing him! That is Ernie, my cat (a girl) basking on the porch.....she wanted to be kinda famous for a while. FYI-- she plays the drums but some of her musical influences are Cat Stevens and Def Leppard (I know, weird). Her fave song?
Year of the Cat by Al Stewart.
Oh my God, stop me I am emabarassed for myself!! I am goaning and rolling my eyes at myself.
But I was serious--I really like Lou Reed and I meant it, if anything, as a bad memory from Vanilla Ice
* embarassed and....groaning*
Scot told me that there is some Antony goodness here, and he was right! hehe
That song is amazing. I love both of them together. What a performance!
What, you need scotty to screen my posts for you!!!!!!!!!!!
wuts up with that!
And here I was waiting for your gleeful cries of discovery and subsequent outpourings of props and heartfelt gratitude at my masterful posting prowess.
Darn, I feel cheated :-(
I did not see that comment backfiring...
I hereby offer you gleeful cries of discovery and subsequent outpourings of props and heartfelt gratitude at your masterful posting prowess, and sacrifice 5 virgins in your honour as an added bonus.
5 virgins huh? Well, 3 medium sized barnyard animals would probably have done the trick and no doubt would have been easier to find. 'Course I understand your need for atonement - alright, 5 virgins it is. All is forgiven. :-)
