Legacy Indeed

Posted about 3 years ago

Culled from "Pearl" Legacy Edition is this demo version of Me and Bobby Mcgee. Pearl is undeniably Janis Joplin s studio classic, and her final recording, released posthumously. She departed the earth at the very top of her game creatively, and just listening to this bring tears to my eyes.

A year or so ago I saw the musical theater show Janis when it came in San Francisco, based on the letters she had written her mother after she had moved to San Francisco.  If found it moving, and the music and singers that played her were great.

Thanks for sharing this demo version.  It's more creative and expressive than the version on my 1969 single by Roger Miller, one year before she recorded it, and two years before Kris Kristofferson's version was released.  Kristofferson had a brief affair with her.

I always picture Janis as a plump, homely girl, and I'm wrong. Dunno why that is.

I suppose we don't know if she was at the top of her game or not, since she rained out before the 9th inning.

Janis, like Dylan, Hendrix, and Jim Morrison, is a cult. Notice I use the present tense. I wonder what she'd be if she had stuck around.

    Sad really.
