When I first got the album "Lost and Safe" by The Books several months ago, I didn't really care for it. It just didn't click with me.But in the past month or so I picked it back up and have been enjoying it quite a lot. I think the listening environment was what prevented me from originally getting into it. It's a quiet, subtle album and demands to be paid attention to. If I have it on as background music while I'm doing something else, it's not a very good album. But if I'm actively listening to it, Lost and Safe is
phenomenal. They don't use traditional song structures, so there's nothing you can really tap your foot to or sing along with. The layered textures and found conversations all combine together into intricate song and soundscapes. It's hard to find the time to listen to Lost and Safe; it's definitely not good driving music, and I'm generally too distracted at work. I can listen to it at home if I'm not really doing anything else and the neighbors and parrot aren't making too much noise. Maybe I should dig out some headphones one of these days and check it out that way.I'd recommend this album to fans of experimental music. If you like bands such as Coil or Shinjuku Thief, you may dig this, too. *
