Because It Smells Like Fall, A Song to Sink Into.... A Gorgeous Sublime Tune.

Posted over 3 years ago

Today, as I peek my head out of my window in NYC, I smell "fall"- a peppery mix of decomposing leaves and firewood. Considering that whenever I stick my head out of my window, I am surrounded by brick buildings, not trees, perhaps it's more my imagination. Regardless, Fall makes me think of Halloween and knit sweaters and hot coco and cuddling in layers of blankets. So as I tuckered into PJs, I pondered the perfect song for fall. And I came up with this:

Have you ever heard of a band Frontier Ruckus?

I hadn't heard of the 6-peice Michigan based crew either, till I found this song..........

And then I fell in love.......................

With the flow, the ebb of the warbling folk tune................

The impeccable, grotesque yet true lyrics that weep, the genius of lyricist Matthew Milia.....

"The bathroom does taste of menstration chasing like musk through window streams. Like wounded doves, all pretty things bleed.

Just listen.

We can talk about the cold later.

loved the song, and thanks for setting the mood.. its raining here in the NW, colors of fall, and a promise of snow on the mountains.. that what I feel.. upcoming trips to the Cascades and enjoying Mogul Masher drinks at the local ski resort and spanish coffees downtown!

    Cheers!

Dear Yummy- hehe yeah that shot was taken after someone spilled wine on my jacket and I was furiously trying to scrub it out. You can't tell how pissed I was at all! I look so serene! :)

yeah the song is perfect for rain and introspection :)

    gotta love the NW

Lots of longing in that tune, pixie. And that would be appropos for my favorite time of year, melancholia and all. As it happens, there's nowhere I'd rather be than Manhattan in the autumn - the crispness of the air, trees aflame with seasonal colors, the scent of baking apple pies (and other harvest delicacies) wafting out of the restaurant vents in downtown. But I am currently stuck on the Left Coast with its infuraitingly temperate climate - which, of course, I relish in the dead of winter and the height of summer. Guess I'll make the best of it and enjoy myself for the next four weeks. I am, after all, in the Halloween capitol of the world - Greenwich Village and West Hollywood parades notwithstanding...

methinks you set the tone of my week, pixie. a tune filled with yearning, melancholy, dreadful beauty.

"a peppery mix of decomposing leaves and firewood" - word.

"The bathroom does taste of menstration chasing like musk through window streams. Like wounded doves, all pretty things bleed." - amen.

John Keats, melodramatic???  How dare ye?

I failed my master's exam the first time around because I failed to study this poem.  I knew the rest of Keats backwards and forwards, but not this one.  Naturally, I know it well now.  And now, for you, from me: a cautionary ode for one who might go for an Autumn walk in the woods.  Watch out for snakes getting sleepy and looking for rocks to nap under.

    Ode to Melodrama

    Mellow drama is:

a not so mellow red and yellow fellow

    in the browning grass,

    winding his way toward you

to bite you in the ass.

The horn is what really makes that song work for me--I like it.

New York still smells like the ghetto from where I'm sitting, but the fall ghetto at least.
