OMG

Last night Andy Rourke from The Smiths DJed........................

Posted about 1 year ago

LE ROYALE ( i stole this from NY Mag's website....shhhhhhhhhhhhh)

at a place called Le Royale owned by my buddy Terry Casey (a true music afficionado)...

So of course 300 Smith fans were curious what how he would play.....

It was funny bc Mr Rourke ain't an I-Pod DJ. He takes the craft seriously.

Since Le Royale is a kind of cubbyhole of a club- and the upper club room was as dark and dim as Lehman Brothers employee's spirits (something tells me more New Yorkers will be wearing black this winter than ever before), Monsieur Rourke needed a flashlight to see - and used it to deeply inspect each and every button on the mixer....I half expected him to pull out an instruction manual.

Some fun facts:

a) he doesn't look 20. no shit. and was up WAY past bedtime (till circa 2-3 am?)

b) his musical tastes weren't exactly hip but he was trying really hard....i.e. he played Interpol if my blurry memory serves me correctly.....yes, at a nightclub....

c) The biggest surprise?

He really got the crowd groooving with?

The Ting Tings! yeah. like a bad ass remix of "Not My Name".

Hilarious.

For any of you NYCers, this upcoming Monday, at Le Royale?

Word on the street is it'll be My bloody valentine.............

September 22 ?
OFFICIAL MY BLOODY VALENTINE AFTER-PARTY
WE DJS WILL BE OF THE CHOICE OF THE BAND

DOORS OPEN AT 10PM

woooga.

ps on a random tangent, here's a bad-ass art piece that sums up my morning sentiments:

Mark Gonzales exhibition in Berlin, 1998.

Happy Bloody Sunday :)

Very interesting...I liked the "Ting Tings"single ,i must be about the same age as Rourke, they've got that whole "Tom Tom Club" thing going on ,so they caught us old "Talking Heads" fans..., Got put right about their merits as a rock band  relative to "The Kills"though , by a much younger girlfriend.. It seems Andy Rourke now looks like Mike Reid! ..although i spose that is also a generic "Manc" haircut..a la "Mani"(Stone Roses/Primal Scream).and all of "The Charlatans".i shouldnt be too hard on him.His bass-playing in The Smiths was state of the art!

thanks for the reall 411 on andy rourke as DJ!

in the fall of 2005, when i was on tour, in tallahassee, fl, i drove past a club where the marquee announced "oct 17: andy rourke of the smiths"

i was only in town for one night - october 9 - so i didn't get to find out what kind of DJ andy was.  thanks!
