WHERE THE HOKEY POKEY "IS" WHAT IT'S ALL ABOUT

NEW EXCLUSIVE VIDEO INTERVIEWS w. Matt Berninger from The National~ At Happy Hour in Brooklyn

Posted about 1 year ago

A couple weeks back, on a hot and steamy day in Brooklyn, I met Matt Berninger from The National at a quiet bar with a permanent all-day happy hour. Matt had just returned that week from an extensive European tour and he was just recovering from jetlag and months of bus living. We grabbed lemonades and brews and chatted about things most people don't already know about his album "The Boxer", his first band named after his mom( "Nancy", how sweet), his thoughts on Nirvana, and the importance of being googlable.

/>

The most surprising fact I found out was he used to be an every day man- working for a company, Icon Nicholson, presumably in a suit, doing a 9 to 5.....until pretty recent. He ascended to 'rock fame' only well within the past decade (most of the members retained their dayjobs for a while after The National started in 1999) and I think that definitely adds an element to his candid nature and understanding of the ephemeral and whimsical nature of popularity and fame. If you've ever listened to The National, you can hear this sort of distillation of 'every day man' and growing older in their lyrics as well.

<img src=http://mog.com/mogtv/the_national1

You've inspired me to pop in The Boxer and to give Cherry Tree some much deserved attention.

You're such a lucky person for interviewing all of these people! Although if I ever met Matt Berninger, I don't think I'd be able to say anything out of shock. Great interview!
