LOLLA Day 3
The humidity and heat returned for the final day of Lollapalooza but Obama was still a no show (Barack had been rumored to make an appearance all weekend). Nevertheless, the audience as well as the artists ramped up the energy, special guests & surprises. Nine Inch Nails battled versus Kayne for attention till the very end.

With a new red-hued do, Nicole Atkins charmed the crowd with her blend of rock/folk with psychedlia roots.

Saul Williams the poet. the musician. the muse.
Now if you haven't seen Saul Williams of yet, it's quite a live act to be had. Not because of Saul's legendary way with words (though I recommend his poetry). Instead, his live musical act is a cross between a video game drama and a war cry- roughly strewn hip-hop and tear-jerking lyrics atop ferocious musical beats that are loud enough to burst your ear drums. As he comments on the world's dismal state, the right to action, he's covered in full Native American gear, feathers and day-glo- ready to lead the charge.

Next Up? The Black Kids.

The Black Kids, mighty popular amongst the minors, reved the crowd up into a sweat.

Awesome pics and review! Lovn it.
jesus Trent needs to lay off the 'roids
i'm excited to see this new NIN lineup in person soon
the NIN photo made me laugh outloud
Great photos! Was Sabina actually revealing her face? She rarely does that (unless she's changed it up lately).
yeah i seriously think she's channeling Bjork these days. Whatever it is it's working; The Brazilian Girls were riveting live.
So here's a question - Do you choose the bands you review and shoot based on your interests or is there more to it than that?
hmmmm. why Erico? Photog in training?
well here's the process (excluding editorial jargon):
first off, there's survival of the fittest: the obvious bands to choose- ones that let 100 fans onstage most sets (i.e. Girltalk), ones that dress like native americans in day-glo (Saul Williams), the legends (the one-namers), then the hype bands (The Black Kids comes to mind)..........
Then there's restrictions: I was restricted from Radiohead (no web, no AP) and all photogs were restricted from shooting Kanye.
Then there's the festival lay-out affect: if a band I dig is 12 acres away going on in 10 minutes, I defer to AP.
Then there's the beer affect: nuf said. (kidding. kinda)
Then there's my predilections: bands with whom I am friends, bands I adore, bands I enjoy shooting as much as I enjoy watching. Can't miss those out of love.
That said, in this scenario, for this blog, I am basically my own boss - but other pubs are completely different. Regardless, it really depends where you get your best shot. You capture a moment; you capture a moment....don't matter what stage, what time really. And on that note, I'd rather be shooting than watching- something about the process for me (I am a madly visual person) makes me feel closer to the music- internalizing it more. Could be the fact the speakers are blowing in my face as well of course :)
Hope this helps Eric mate.
pixie: when getting that close, that the speakers are blowing in your face - please wear plugs... because no amount of visuals will keep you inside the music if you permanently damage your hearing. (just a small piece of advice...)
I have been fortunate enough to follow my own advice, but I know way too many fans, and musicians, who weren't so lucky...
Cheers,
Van
always do mate :)
Nah, I'll stick to my day job (teaching). You answered my question nicely. Everything you mentioned makes sense even though it's interesting you enjoy taking photos more than watching the band. A sign of a true photographer I suppose. Ever wear earplugs? I had to after I started losing my hearing. Appreciate the insight.
Always been a big fan of your work, and it was good seeing in New York for MGMT and The Ting Tings. Loving all your Lolla pics.
