WHERE MUSIC LISTENS TO YOU

how ugly is the new myspace?

Posted about 1 year ago

I signed on yesterday, and I had to mouse-wade through the ads to see where the hell to enter my password. Today, on the mainpage www.myspace.com, Steve Carrell and Anne Hathaway stand on either side of the front page- like lions in front of mystical gates- looking quite intimidating and accusatory.

And what's with the top that says "New to myspace? Take a Tour/ Latino." Is that not a bit strange? Evidently they have launched a Latino version of Myspace (complete with "Hoy en Myspace" as an introduction)....But isn't Latino a race not solely a language? According to the US Census Bureau, Latino is defined as:

  • Spanish speakers and persons belonging to a household where Spanish was spoken
  • Persons with Spanish heritage by birth location
  • Persons who self-identify with Spanish ancestry or descent

In which case, isn't having a Spanish language myspace called "Latino" a form of mild segregation- not to mention an inaccurate lingual categorization? What about all the non-spanish speaking latinos?! I expect you all to be writing commentary....It just seems whack. I am fedexing the US census definition to our friend Tom Anderson asap.

ps for fun, the good old school Get Smart musical theme:

the bat man movie home page was killing me everytime I tried to login the other day.

It's crap, but I network with a lot of musicians via it, so I suppose it's a necessary evil.

My lovely myspace page, by the way

Why does MySpace seem to attract so many Satan worshippers and freakazoids?

I think the Latino version of myspace is just trying to take over the people who still use www.migente.com so I don't think of it as "segregation"...theyre just trying to capitalize on a market that already exists.

I asked my girlfriend (who is nicaraguan) what she thought...and she said that "Myspace Latino" is politically incorrect but its not something she'd get all upset over.

you got lucky.  i'd rather see Get Smart than the McDonald's ad i caught most of the day.

Myspace still serves a purpose, but they definitely don't make a reason for you to hang there.

Myspace...ha! I don't mind going to a particular band's account, but I avoid all contact beyond that. The whole concept is a strange phenomenon to me - it's always been ugly and ill concieved, but attracts people in droves. When I first setup my account, I wanted to change it to a musician account, but it was not possible. Got one message back from Tom acknowledging the problem and that they were "working on it" What was that...2 yrs ago?? Anyway, I buried it.

Thanks-i was thinking I was the only one who thinks the new myspace layout is awful.  It's like it had the MSN treatment and became just boring and unusable but like others here, I have to use it to network with musicians so plough on we must...

haha me too- I had to vent somewhere and thought you moggers with divine taste- music and otherwise would agree.

Petey- I think mouse-wade is my word of day :)

Mr Frost- Glad you consulted your GF. I needed a separate source to verify it is politically incorrect. It's nothing I'd start a fight over in all seriousness but it does emphasize how RIDICULOUS myspace has become.....

my theory is that bc they have lost all their daily users to facebook (Myspace still rules in the music merry-go-round...).....they are teething as much as they can to make money and still suck in new users (i.e. hoy the "latino" community)....To bad they hired someone who is colorblind and design inept to 'recraft' the damn thing. It continues to hurt my artistic eyes :)

phew . vent. vent. vent. huff :)

I'd agree that the new Latino Myspace is mildly un-PC; however the thought of separating (or profiling) one culture amongst many diverse cultures and ethnicities is completely and utterly racist.  I always thought the best way to describe those from Spanish speaking countries was Hispanic.  Is that not the case anymore?

that's it. i am adding it to my virtual dictionary pete. :)

Jox. myspace is a little home in a virtual tree where lots of underage ppl like to hang out, loiter, wax poetic, and meet other boys and girls of similar page coloring. Each neighborh graffitis their personal place in this tree with photos and patterns; most people leave a radio on in their space....playing one or two songs on repeat. It's a place where you never really grow old tho- unless you want to. Beware tho- there's lots of crocks, criminals and nude people running about tho....I warn ya.

I haven't looked at it, but, in answer to the question in your headline, may i suggest:

...homelier than the other side of a mud fence.

...so ugly that if it was a dog i owned, i'd shave its butt and teach it to walk backward.

...so ugly its momma has to hang a porkchop 'round its neck to get the dogs to play with it.

I logged on there to check my band's page out, and I couldn't even find the freakin' inbox to respond to an older email.  I had to go through all sorts of clicks before I got to it.

I've always liked "so ugly it would make a freight train take a dirt road."

Wow, saw this post and headed over for the first time in a long time to check my page. I was happy to find out someone had been trying to access my page, and it is currently under some sort of lockdown for the next 48 hours. Oh, and by the way it is rather fugly

MySpace is just trying to become more "Web 2.0" with their design. I'll be the first one to say that MySpace is disastrous, but at least they are giving an effort now. Give the new look time while they continue to make alterations. You obviously have to get used to all of the differences before you can complain about it.
