WHERE MUSIC LISTENS TO YOU

Nicole Atkins- Introducing the girl by the sea

Posted about 1 year ago
Have you guys ever heard of Nicole Atkins?

The first time I met her was in a dingy basement backstage of Mercury Lounge in NYC...she was chilling with my friends Dax Riggs and one of us bummed a cigarette from one another and bitched how bad we wanted to quit. (We both since have- save a couple drunken nights) Since then, we've become friends and she's quite a charmer and fire sparker- born, based and unabashedly inspired by the Jersey Shore (yes- that shore that gets berated regularly by Manhattanites, the shore that is lined with decrepit turn of the century buildings that echo and pulse of spirit, forgotten dreams, secrets, and romantic things passed).

With that in mind, she crafts some amazing music- with a smoky, molasses voice, with a natural vibrato....and a little of grit and authority....(that transcends her age).

Her album "Neptune City" is seeping, romantic and dark- she calls it Pink Floyd-esque (she also describes herself as a chick version of Roy Orbison, hell yeah)

I figure her music is perfect for a day supposed to be spent by the sea, so I thought I would share it with you this memorial day. I'm working on an interview with her....so look forward to that. But till then, I induce you to check out her myspace (www.myspace.com/nicoleatkins) and let me know what you think?

  9. Bartleby says @Neill: LOL... You're an impish commentator, sir. I've never heard of Miss Atkins and I must say it'd have been a shame if she'd had stayed a stranger to my ears. Her voice is redolent of Mama Cass Elliot. Pretty lovely too. Thanks for the introduction.

  13. Eric5776 says She did guest vocals on "Young Folks" w/ Peter Bjorn & John at their Maxwell's show last September. That was the first time I heard of her. She seems to be getting some great exposure here and there. How is her record doing - it's on Sony/Columbia, correct?

  15. indiepixie says phew- i took a lil break in the park and came back to the slew of positive words :) I'll be sure to pass these praises on to her. The best part is she's worked hard to get to where she is...she had pretty much every job on the block in NYC...and then moved to Jersey to sit back and contemplate a bit...the album Neptune City was made between her stint in the South, Brooklyn and Jersey.....and i think it is reflective of all of it- finding home, dreaming of home, dreaming of love, dreaming of what's lost.... but most of all, I like how she's proud where she hails from, despite its inperfections....and perhaps for its imperfections. Brain of J, Robin, Universalis, Bart, Van, glad you dig it...you are my best soundingboards....glad you appreciate her art as much as i do... Eric- thanks for the tip. I didn't know she did that cover! back to memorial day....dreaming of beaches and sea :)

  18. Mike the Knife says As a part-time Jersey boy (the family has a house down the shore, north of Atlantic City), she speaks to me. And I totally adored her on Letterman, and when she played Craig Ferguson's show as well. She's the sort of deserving praise-worthy performer who almost makes me regret having abandoned my critic's chair at the daily. Almost. Next time you see her, give her regards from the Left Coast. If nothing else, I'll be talking her up on the air.

  27. Cody B says pixie said: unabashedly inspired by the Jersey Shore (yes- that shore that gets berated regularly by Manhattanites, the shore that is lined with decrepit turn of the century buildings that echo and pulse of spirit, forgotten dreams, secrets, and romantic things passed). Manhattanites can be pretty f...ing provincial, can't they. Sad thing is that quote could go for the Real Manhattan as well. The same folks that would complain about the Jersey shore are the same that would favor the further mallification of the island. They are turning it into a suburban jewel, though..and it still ain't got no beach.

  28. Universalis says ' ' ' Bold must go away... :)Trying another "un-bolder" :) at least it seems to work in preview mode.
    Permalink posted 05/27/2008
  29. indiepixie says universalis what is the unbolder? Anna- e-fate indeed :) Codyb- that's why i enjoy Nicole so much- she refreshing and kinda just shrugs and mocks how narrow minded and snide NYers can be....tho you are rt that shore is turning into a bit of suburbian 'jewel'. Psyched, we're working on an interview with her to be out real soon. Will let ya know :)

  31. Cody B says I was talking about folks turning Manhattan into a gigantic mall..an urban mall! The Jersey shore works for one reason..beautiful beaches, accessible to everyone. It's organic, it should be that way, that's why it works well as a symbol, slightly tarnished but still radiant. Manhattan is for tourists and rich folks. The steel and glass condos throughout the East Village are the symbol of everything wrong with the island. A deluxe suburb built up instead of out.

  39. xfenris says when i first heard nicole's music, something like 2004, i knew she was a unique(to me) performer that was sure to find expanse in what seemed to be a void in the conventional norm. She deserves all the liberties she gets and she uses them to the utmost. just from the way she uses her hands, you can tell she's very brilliant minded, her artistry is true. More then finding her success, she's breaking the conventional mold of vogue.
    Permalink posted 05/28/2008
  40. indiepixie says xfenris- true that. indeed she is brilliantly minded :) phew- It's great to see so many lovers of hers.....no surprise of course.

  41. Robin Danar says ok, a ton of people seem to love Nicole, and many have heard about her here. that's awesome! if you really dig her, BUY her CD. she's working real hard. she may be on a label, but it really helps! by the way..........i don't work for her or her label. artists like her just need fan support so they can keep making more music.
    Permalink posted 05/28/2008
  42. xfenris says yeah indiepixie, her fans don't like her, they love her. i don't think my eyes are being biased in saying so either. Yeah, i just want to slip her cd into annonymous mail boxes.

  43. incurablyerin says I'm looking forward to that interview. I think it's about time Ms. Atkins gets thrust into the limelight--and it all seems to be working out nicely for her. I first saw her open up for Hopewell & the Birds of Appetite in Brooklyn a few years ago, right after NA & the Sea had finished that ep (which, I felt the production was more than a little lackluster and did the songs very little justice). Great to hear a killer first LP from her, and to see her getting attention from all over--it's all well deserved.
