IS PRINCE WORTH $4.8 Million? (For Coachella today?)

Posted about 1 year ago
I am sitting by the pool w. 10 other Coachella attendees- and we are all wondering if PRINCE will be worth it. According to Rollingstone, Coachella paid $4.8 Million to play today at Coachella (they again the RS source was Perez Hilton....remind me again how Rollingstone can quote Perez Hilton as a source?).....(See here: http://www.rollingstone.com/rockdaily/index.php/2008/04/11/princes-reported-coachella-price-48-million/) and since there are 60,000 sales - for 3 days- the promoters gross profit (before expenses) is approximately $18 million. However yesterday, there was only 40,000 tho so they are some mill lower than that. So out of less than $15-$18 million in gross profit, Coachella was willing to spend $5 million just on Prince. We hope he's worth it. Anyone seen him live?

  1. Chuck Guest says I haven't seen him live, but an observation: as a rule, Super Bowl half-time shows suck; Prince killed it. He has more talent in his little pinky (and, given the proportion to the rest of his diminutive body, that's one little pinky) than most musicians aspire to have in their current body or any other they may inhabit prior to their cessation of worldly desires.

  2. GarageRock says I agree...the best halftime performance that I've ever seen, including Petty this year. However, nearly $5 mil to be just another (albeit major) act in what is already a killer show without him? No....not worth it IMO.

  3. Michael Goldberg says I saw the Purple Rain tour and it was one of the most amazing performances I'd ever seen and I saw James Brown (though not when Brown was Prince's age) and the Stones and Iggy and The Who and the Sex Pistols. I saw him in the late '90s on a TV talk show set where he performed live and kicked it again, awesome.

  4. Brutha Los says Go see Prince live! I just saw the last tour for Musicology and it was bar none the best concert I've ever seen. I'd pay the brutha 5million to play an out of tune guitar on a street corner.

  5. Sturgell says After living in Minneapolis for about two years and listening to amount of pride that town has for their sparkling son, I'd have to say yes.

  6. DenRA says I met Prince on a trip in 1981 on a trip and he is a real down to earth, but spirited person who said he was working with Morris Day and the Time then...he got in San Francisco and got off in Minneapolis. I had no idea at the time who he was then....but later it all gets more clear as time moves on! If anybody deserves it he does, amazing talent and mentor as a performer and spiritual being!

  9. Jonh Ingham says I saw him twice last year at his London shows. Worth every second of my time. He's got what is probably the best r 'n' b revue since James Brown and the Famous Flames in the 60s. (Not that I saw that show, but I've got the records and seen the vids.)

  10. Viva La Britt says I'm so in the minority. Because he no longer performs the classic & salacious (read: my favorite) songs in his catalog, my answer would be no, he's not worth it. That said, I was not all moved by his halftime performance, so maybe I'm just dense. To boot, the Coachella organizers are insane to give up that much of their profit (though it is reaffirming that any company is willing to take such a hit to keep fans happy and maintain its reputation).

  12. tjayfowler says The are millions and millions of dollars of sponsorships, revenue from vendors, water, food sales, camping fees, . Coachella will be making a pretty huge return on their investment. Just look at the press this morning -- that'll play a huge part in people kicking themselves for not attending, and will extend into next year's attraction factor. **kicks self**

  13. kaluss says oh worth it. and now that the reviews of the show coming in.....it sounds like it was incredible....covering radiohead? busting out the old funk standards....morris day, sheila e! let's hear a review.

  14. Jon O says Oh, yes, he's definitely worth it. Even though his songwriting might not be as amazing now as it was in the 80s, he ranks as one of the most awesome musicians alive. My Gemini Soul bandmate Andre was a member of Prince's NPG club a couple of years ago so we were able to see a special show for fans only at San Francisco's intimate Fillmore Theater, and we were just 10 feet from the stage. Incredible show!

I flew to London to see Prince for 2 shows and 2 aftershows. Mind you I flew from NYC. I gave up ALL my summer traveling and saved everything for that experience and it was worth it.

I saw him on his Musicology Tour and he convinced me he was worth all the money in the world.

The man is the quintessential performer. He models his worth ethic off of James Brown! James Brown was someone NOT to mess with on the road for he worked his team but they always had the best shows.
