The Recipe for "She and Him"

Posted almost 4 years ago
Recipe for Indie Rock SuccessTake one indie starlit with a goofy name, blue doe-eyes, and nymph-like timber to her voice (i.e. Zooey Deschanel- (her first name means "life" in Greek (Anna correct me if I am wrong), her last name means "Of Channels" in French...if you don't speak drench too good.)Add one young, slightly goofy mollasses-and-cigarette voiced-folk rocker with a talent evocative of Dylan merged with Elliot Smith.....Mix their creative juices together for a couple days in a studio. Infuse some 1950s flavor. Allow only ONE taste before you cook (i.e. one release. see attached. and relish.)Throw in a pout. and reluctance to be interviewed.Add on the budget of a small but well-respected record label (Merge Records).Present ONLY once or twice, for special occasions, on super small stages, in front of only a super-dedicated and super industry-saturated audiences (Noise Pop Festival & SXSW)ET VOILA! You've got Indie Rock GENIUS. People will be licking the plate!or at least I am :)PS please feel free to share any other recipes :)

  3. matt cleveland says Can't wait for this whole thing. I'm an M. Ward fanatic (he's as nice and gracious in person as he sounds like he would be on his albums), and I fell in love with Zooey's voice in Elf!

  4. Joxley says I'm just looking forward to a bizarre real world/Almost Famous crossover where William Miller reviews screen sibling Zooey's work...

  7. Cody B says Lots of chuckles here along with the good tuneage, but, "Of Channels" in french, had me rolling.

  8. indiepixie says haha yeah it's wonky french...and definitely not grammatical :) glad you guys like the groove- I wrote about M Ward years ago for Flavorpill and am glad to see he hasn't gotten over-absorbed yet (in a good way).... and I TOTALLY approve of this musical marriage. :) Jox- don't know much about the bro./sis relations. do tell.

We've been digging this song big time on the air for over a month. Heard a few other samples from the album and it's a winner! Can't wait for the official release.

Love your recipe! Don't know about a reluctance for interviews. They're on the front cover of "Under The Radar". Somewhere in the article it stated the album comes out in September and not March. Oops. Must double check. Remember reading that a month ago and wondering out loud at the Barnes and Nobel magazine stand, "If it comes out in September...why are they on the cover now?" *lol

  10. indiepixie says haha maybe it's just some interviews. According to the Noisepop pps, they aren't interviewing at this festival :) I think they are doing a daytrotter session. Do your research and let me know. :) I'd love to hear an interview.

  11. darmuzz says I have been listening to She & Him this week. I hadn't heard Zooey's voice before and was surprised by the 50s/alt-country/girl group flavours...dare I say, reminds me some of Jenny Lewis?

  12. ivylander says Sorry to say that, while I like the music lots, her voice isn't doing it for me.

  13. ardyjormkiv says huh...i did like her voice a lot on elf...this sounds more pop, less of the sultry, jazzy type on the soundtrack. but its still good. i honestly just listened to m. ward for the first time this week with his cover of ''let my love open the door'' and i don't know why i waiting so long... mmm...cupcakes.

  14. indiepixie says i thought the cupcake looked yummy too :) I haven't heard the whole album so no idea if the duo has staying power. will let you guys know if I see em live this sunday....they're playing in san fran... ivy-it's all fair man. we can't always have the same taste otherwise we'd have little to talk about! x IP
