OMG

Sick as a dog. Drowned in Sound.

Posted about 1 year ago
So I've been in bed for 2 days now, aching, sneezing, and weezing. It sucks, but somehow, music has gotten me through it. Like this new video from Sonlux. Frenetic and dynamic- it doesn't make me feel so bad for being pent up and quarantined. Son Lux is on Anticon records...It's the work of electronic-ambient creator Ryan Lott. Here's the reason for the name Son Lux, according to an MTV Blog:"There’s nothing terribly profound about the name “Son Lux.” I created the moniker because I had in mind to create a record of songs that were not really songs, but chants—small fragments of text set in shifting sonic landscapes. It’s an experiment for me, an exploration of chant and meditation practice in a pop context (though I should say the record isn’t exactly poppy. It borrows certain pop music constructions, but particularly avoids the two-part structural leanings of pop). Because I, as Ryan Lott, do everything from hip-hop to classical to jazz to folk, I created the “Son Lux” moniker to distinguish an identity for this particular concept.":)

  1. ivylander says If I remember the story correctly, Brian Eno "invented" "ambient music" while he was knocked flat with a bad flu. It's true that you hear things in a different way. This is quite lovely - though, as someone who's recovering from something you've still got, I may be biased. If you've been down for two days, you're probably on your way back up tomorrow....

  3. dansemcabre says Ha! I used to have a six hour vhs tape of old bugs bunny cartoons I used to watch when I was sick. it got messed up after about eight years I miss it. when you lose your mind finally and completely I wanna hear what your listening to then. it'll be no doubt be great. unless it's white noise or am radio static.

  4. indiepixie says dude i have watched about 6 films and am seeing things blurry- there is a ring of tissues around my bed that almost looks poetic and shakesperean at this point- like a ring of daisies. I am sure I have a few in my hair as well. so I agree it's true it's weird music to listen to while sick. But I went through one day of straight Ella Fitzgerald and Sufjan Stevens, another day of straight up blues, so today I went for new and obscure. And decided to share :) hehe I am not better by tomorrow tho I may lose my mind :) FAY

  10. Mike the Knife says Lost my voice two weeks ago - bad for a broadcaster. But found it in time. Here's to your speedy recovery, i.p. Meanwhile, I'm happy that you brought some attention to Mr. Lott's work. Thanks! Despite my interest in and affection for electronic/ambient music, Son Lux was new to me, too. Enveloping sounds - and a rippin' trippin' clip to boot!

  13. vannatta says Enjoyed the tune/video. Like Joxley I now have the sniffles, although I think it was delivered through the video somehow... woke up fine, watched the video, got the sniffles... hmmm... get well soon... ivylander: I believe you're right - something was wrong with the way Sir Eno's speakers were wired, and he was too sick to get up and fix it... and there is a way to wire your stereo when listening to the Ambient Series as well - (or any "broad stereo image recording" according to Eno: AN AMBIENT SPEAKER SYSTEM I regard this music as environmental: to be experienced from the inside. Accordingly I considered releasing a quadrophonic version of it, an idea I abandoned upon realising that very few people (myself included) own quadrophonic systems. However, I have for many years been using a three-way speaker system that is both simple to install and inexpensive, and which seems to work very well on any music with a broad stereo image. The effect is subtle but definite - it opens out the music and seems to enlarge the room acoustically. In addition to a normal stereo hifi system all that is required is one extra loudspeaker and some speaker cable. The usage of this speaker in the three-way system is such that it will not be required to handle very low frequencies: therefore a small or "mini" speaker will be adequate. As shown in the diagram, the two terminals of the new speaker are connected to the two positive (red) speaker connectors on the amplifier. This speaker is located somewhere behind the listener - at the apex of a triangle whose base is formed by the original loudspeaker set-up. One of the unexpected benefits of this system is an increase in the usable listening area - almost any point in the room will yield good (although not necessarily "accurate") stereo sound. I arrived at this system by accident, and I don't really know why it works. What seems to happen is that the third speaker reproduces any sound that is not common to both sides of the stereo - i.e., everything that is not located centrally in the stereo image - and I assume that this is because the common information is put out of phase with itself and cancels out. More technically, the lower the impedance of the added speaker, the louder it will sound. If it is found to be too loud (although this rarely seems to happen), you can either insert a potentiometer (6-12 ohms, at least 10 watts) into the circuit, or move the speaker further away.
