jaymay always a muse
Some muses just continue to inspire. Especially the quirky ones. (can't figure out the capo thing but whatever) 1) Story Intro: While bumming at my friend's house in LA a few weeks ago, I was browsing some photos with her roommate- a fellow photographer- when on her computer- I spotted the name "Jaymay" pop up on her computer music list. 2) Historical Relevance: Now, I hadn't heard the name in a few years, since I reviewed Jaymay for Flavorpill: "Evoking the spirit of a '60s Parisian jazz chanteuse, honey-voiced, Long Island-born Jaymay kicks off tonight's lineup of eclectic local talent. While certain tracks have the witty candor of Suzanne Vega, Jaymay's lilting soprano conveys a fragility and intimacy that obliges total immersion. Tris McCall & the New Jack Trippers present electro-rock Jersey jams, followed by indie rockers Midnight Show. The fierce, rebellious, and rude Giraffes headline with lead singer Aaron Lazar's taunts, while his bandmates spew impious metal riffs with thunderous drums." -FAY 3) Plot Thickens: Well- as it turns out- the roommate turned out to be Jaymay's sister. Small world. 4) Inspired and curious, I ended up touching base with pixie-esque folkster Jaymay and found out her career is progressing nicely. She just completed a robust UK tour, with Okkervil River, that concluded December 12th at Mercury Lounge. Her record Autumn Fallin' came out worldwide on itunes and will be in stores in the US on March 11th. 5) Conclusion: Why the hell you give a damn? Well I'll let you decide. I first heard her singing this song "You are the only one I love" (couldn't find it, sorry)....Since then her style has grown less bubbly and a bit more ironic & sassy... Check it, let me know what you think. Above was her new single to wipe away the winter doldrums. Below are a couple clips interviewing her on her influences. Don't we all need influences :)
