A Trinidadian Affair with TV on the Radio

Posted almost 4 years ago
Last week, hipsters, economists, artists, humanists alike gathered, slurped sweet concoctions, and raved at SFOTE's fundraiser at New York's sleek Tribeca Grand Hotel. Though I am always skeptical of these type of charity events held in luxury venues (Whatever happened to bake sales? A hipster street bake sale (w. drums and breakdancing on the street) would be far cooler and far less pretentious), when I heard TV on the Radio was performing, I hightailed it there. In front of their devote Brooklyn friends and fanbase, TVOTR's Kyp Malne and Tunde Adebimpe performed, as well as my favorite chick rapper outa BKLYN Santogold, and the progressive experimental group Gang Gang Dance. Now, I have been obsessed with TVOTR's "Wolf Like Me".......Along with their new single since their 2006 Return to Cookie Mountain, PROVINCE (can't embed due to rts)...as well as Dreams, which displays the same type of hypnotic, close eyes, shake head, and bounce/jump/ravage type of heavy riffed, electric progressions w. strong rhythm sections, easy hooked type of songs-......BUT I must admit, critic that I am, I felt that live with only two members, TVOTR had a bit of a luke-warm acoustic set. So much of their distinct sound is dependent on those drums, acoustic guitar/bass and keyboard.....So while Kyp and Tunde's talent is not debated, their set sounded like a blue jazz backyard string band-which, while good for a chill porch night amongst fireflies, lacked TVOTR's distinct energetic flare. The better news is the cause was awesome. SFOTE (www.sfote.org) is a newly launched charity with a mission to forming global partnerships and collaborations in order to create sustainable programs thoughout the world. Its 2008 goal is to implement a free transportation system for children in impoverished Laventille, Trinadad. They found due to the lack of transport, most kids are forced to remain uneducated, though school is free, bc their families can't afford the daily bus cost. (If you want to find out more, see "sfote's support site":http://www.sfote.org/support/)...I respect their causes and am going to be keeping an eye on them. Plus, hail all charities that have impressive musical taste...hehe....A trinidadian affair indeed.

  1. Bartleby says How much was it to get in? I've read that the rich would pay up £50,000 for a ticket at a charity dinner. http://www.guardian.co.uk/society/2007/nov/17/socialenterprises.charitablegiving

  4. FluxCapacitor says "we must be surrounded in luxury in order to donate money!" -- Heh, heh, love that. I saw TVOR earlier in the year, and they lost the room a couple of times _without_ an acoustic set...But then they played Wolf Like Me and blasted the roof of the place. I also love that Bowie-backed Province - genius x2. Great charity, but yeah, we must be surrounded by good music to donate money!
