Q and not U will always be one of my favourite bands. Their debut record No Kill No Beep Beep (2000) was reason enough for me to trace the road backwards through the history of punk, which I'd been reticent to do until then.John Davis, the drummer for the now-defunct band, has a new band called Georgie James with Laura Burhenn, whose pixie-like frame belies her deep, throaty, and sultry voice. The first single, Need Your Needs, is incredibly catchy, and entirely unexpected -- like a funkier, more danceable ELO by way of punk, that feels unmistakably new.I know John is talented as hell, but I didn't know he was such a multi-instrumentalist, and that he could sing so beautifully. I'm guessing Harris and Chris kept him behind the drums for a reason (~kidding~).Georgie James is playing not one, but two shows this weekend in NYC (in Brooklyn at Union Hall, and Manhattan at the Annex). I definitely recommend coming out if you like Q and not U, or the bands listed on their MySpage.
