Review of The Blakes: The Blakes

Posted about 5 years ago
I think one reason I've had a hard time of coming up with a review for this record is that it's kind of hard to define. The lead track, "Two Times," is a screaming hunk of anger, while two songs later we've got a pop piece called "Commit" that's everything you'd hoped the Strokes would be but aren't. "Vampire" goes even farther down that poppy road, but it works, even if it sounds like you've shuffled over to someone else's CD. There is one uniting theme across all the songs: The Blakes are into it. It's sincere, and you know they just wanted to make a great rock record. It's on iTunes ( http://tinyurl.com/35y5gm ); dunno about Rhapsody and those other places. The Blakes on MySpace: http://www.myspace.com/theblakes

  1. goodyk says But how does the album compare to seeing them live? I got an iTunes gift card as, well, a gift, and thought I'd use at least part of it to buy this. But I listened to the iTunes samples and, while it was certainly good, it didn't seem as fall-on-the-floor great as they did live. Am I remembering the show as being better than it was? (Certainly a possibility, given that it was on the last night of SXSW during a marathon of venue-hopping.) Or do the samples just not do the entire songs justice? Truly, the Blakes were one of the three or four best shows I saw there. Loved it. But how does the CD stack up?

  2. hontzd says Actually, that’s one thing I was going to say - the CD does capture that energy level that they had live. The opposite is true of the Cinematics CD – it doesn’t come close to the set we saw them do.

  3. hontzd says Hmm, I think iTunes may have labeled the song wrong -- the lyrics of Track 7 seem to suggest its title should be "Vampire", not Track 6, which is the the very poppy number I mention.
