WHERE MUSIC LISTENS TO YOU

Things I almost know something about

Posted over 2 years ago
OK, after being pretty disappointed by my last purchase (the Chemical Brother's We Are the Night - eh), I need to take a leap. As in to something I don't yet own, but have heard some things about. Right now, that means The Editors, Fujiya and Miyagi, and Ratatat. It might also mean Datarock or CSR. Or it might be something you absolutely love and I don't know diddly about. So help me try to decide what I should listen to next. MOG, Last FM and iTunes have given me ideas, but I'd rather hear what you peeps think.

  1. JonHealey says I really like the new Stars record, In Our Bedroom After the War, which is something of a concept album about how people are affected by war. "Take Me To the Riot" absolutely kills. I've heard only the single off of the new Caribou record, but it's *great* -- kinda Go! Team sonically, actually. The latest by Tegan and Sara, The Con, is a lot like their last record in terms of melodies, which means it's addictively winning. And I've been listening to the latest Feist record a lot, plus Ms. John Soda's not-so-new Notes and the Like, Matthew Dear's groove-tastic Asa Breed, the silky Walls by Apparat (blue-eyed soul meets electronica), and the remarkable self-titled disc by Joan as Police Woman. The last one is hard to describe -- kinda bluesy, kinda torch-y.

  2. Anna says With you on the new CB album, MEH. Looked at your library and here I go: Editors, for exquisite post-punk revival (or however the kids these days are calling it). Eagles of Death Metal (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MyslDEFl0Rc), for sexy, fun garage. Shy Child - Noise Won't Stop (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_IMJpCGdcnA and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yc3LFB_V7f4), for the new rave (fear not). Placebo - Meds (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=53bdPpg78UI), for alternative indie rock. Muse (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qiU_WfmoFV8), for new prog rock. Scissor Sisters (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S-tYO_Bz4Xg), for glam rock-pop. Let me know if you like something and/or need anything.

  3. hontzd says @Jon - thanks so much for the recs (both here and over pork chops on Sunday). Really like The National record, and + / - is really cool, too. What was the other band you mentioned having the My Bloody Valentine influence? @Anna - wow, thanks for the bevy of recommendations! I'm going to go buy the Editors right now. It's silly to resist anymore. I think Eagles of Death Metal may get my cash soon, too, simply because the "I Gotta Feelin'" video just cracks me up. Thanks both of you! This is why MOG rawks.
