My uber-wife recently picked up "best of bowie" for me. I had never heard "Ashes To Ashes" before. As I'm listening to it, I realized it was a continuation of "Space Oddity". Hmmm "That's strange!" I thought to myself. Since I was a boy, I was under the impression that Major Tom had been lost in space forever. It had this grand mystery about it, imagining the fate of Major Tom ... So naturally my eyes widened in wonder when I realized what was going on. However, as the song went on an awful truth dawned on me... Major Tom is a metaphor (oh nose!). Check out the chorus of "Ashes To Ashes":Ashes to ashes, funk to funkyWe know major toms a junkieStrung out in heavens highHitting an all-time lowI had to do some research ..... heroin? *gasps* que horror! All my wide-eyed fantasies of space-walking floating spacemen were being dashed agains the rocks of the dreaded Brown (tm). Between that and the Challenger Disaster, it's a wonder I grew up to be the well-adjusted, normal (inserts tongue in cheek) adult (laughs) that I am.... Goodbye Major Tom, youre still one of my heroes. I dont care what they say! I still want to know whose shirt you wear.
