This Week in Adelaide, Australia

In case you know nothing of Adelaide, which would be very understandable, its a town of One Million People, located on the south coast of Australia, between Melbourne and Perth. While some important things have and do happen here, we're the kind of place that a lot of bands leave off of their "national" tours, and this grinds alot of peoples gears. We're big enough to be able to generate a significant amount of animosity, yet insignificant enough to justify missing citing 'tour logistics'.This week, however, was different. On monday, DJ Shadow decided to play here. Last tour, he gave it a miss due to low ticket sales, and from the banter which he thankfully bombarded us with at the show this was a bit of a thorn in his craw. this time we got the goods. And surprisingly, the place was packed. The venue, Thebarton Theatre, is an awesome old Elizabethan style theatre. Awesome acoustics, beatiful ballistrades, fantastic vibe. One of those venues which, when it eventually gets knocked down, will leave thousands of people irreversably damaged, heartbroken, and officially bitter and twisted. I hope to god that this doesn't happen during my lifetime. ANYWAYS...I had my first little dabble in the rave scene when i spent 7 months in England in '02/'03, when i was 20. Prior to that i was a rocker through and through, playing in bands, swearing that nothing will ever top Vitalogy and Doolittle, sporting a shabby old "No Code" T with the greatest of pride. Things changed in England, and i now proudly call myself heavily interested in Hip-Hop, a fair amount of electronica (very partial to the odd random drum and bass rave), and anything well put together, sporting a decent beat and groove. Naturally, DJ Shadow is a fave of mine. So when monday came racing around, all of a sudden i found myself and 8 mates front and center, watching this dude tear a hole in the crowds collective preconceptions, and it was amazing. The show was fairly short (about 90 minutes), but the high was VERY high, and the experience was incredible. Showcasing tunes from Endtroducing... , Unkle, Private Press and some new tracks, Shadow put on one of the most intensely mind blowing performances i've had the pleasure of experiencing. I've seen some decent gigs at Thebbie, from Tea Party to Primus, Muse to Blink 182, Queens of the Stone Age to French/African hip hop collectives, but nothing quite like this. I have some awesome video footage which I captured with my nifty little Panasonic fx 10 digital camera, and anything short of that just wont do it justice.Lets just say it was awesome, and the visuals were astounding, and the vibe was stupendous, and EVERYBODY had an amazing experience. It was so good i decided to relive the moment til around 6am at a friends house with a dozen similarly inspired people. Monday nights are never as good as when you have freshly finished a uni degree, and are enjoyoing the weekday perks of working in hospitality. Sweet, sweet freedom.
To be short, which i must be as i'm leaving the house in a second, this display of talent was one of those things that is single handedly capable of realigning your musical allegiances. The beat, the vibe, the x, the presentation and comradery, all combine to bless people like you and i with a truly astounding musical experience, and its one of those things, along with many others, which i will never forget. To me, this is what living should feel like. Seeing things that wow you, and inspire you to get the most out of the day you happen to be stuck in, really makes you love the random little moments, and bring a whole new palate of experience to the everday. And for that, i am really fucking happy.Which brings me to Tuesday...
