Chick Corea and Bela Fleck - The Enchantment
almost 5 years ago

This is a wonderful album. You get classic Chick Corea, with Bela Fleck further distinguishing himself as one of the world's string virtuosos. As tempting as it is to own this album for the novelty of hearing a banjo play jazz, instead own this album because it's an incredible work of musical art.

John Doe's "A Year In The Wilderness"

Just picked up the new Yep Roc release, John Doe's "A Year In The Wilderness". Emusic has it, and this is some good stuff.John Doe was part of the punk band "X" back in the eighties. This release runs from folk to rock, but not punk. It features guest appearances by Jill Sobule, Kathleen Edwards, Dan Auerbach (from The Black Keys), Greg Leisz, Aimee Mann, and former X bandmate Dave Alvin. Th

Indigenous Tour

Saw the band Indigenous tonight, in a club setting. Indigenous is a hard rocking blues band from South Dakota, made up of 4 siblings. Or at least that's what I was expecting. Instead I find out that the band had decided to pursue different projects, and Indigenous was now Mato Nanji on guitar, and 3 other guys. Sitting at the show, watching the band walk out and realizing it wasn't what I e...

It Gives Me Hope

You try to raise them right, give them values, and no matter how hard-core their musical taste, teach them to have an open mind. Then one day your phone rings, and it's your 22 year old son calling to give you an enthusiastic review of the "G Love and Special Sauce" show he saw the night before. It makes a father proud.

Devil Town

While I don't make it a habit of watching it, Friday Night Lights was on last night and a song they played really caught my attention. It was called "Devil Town", written by Daniel Johnston, and performed by Bright Eyes. This is some good stuff.

Steely Dan

Time to stir the pot a little bit. Mention Steely Dan amongst music fans and you’ll generate emotion. It’s like putting the name “Britney Spears” into a blogger post. The traffic skyrockets and the comments, positive and slanderous, roll in.What is it about Steely Dan that is so polarizing? To some they're geniuses, to others the hatred runs deep. On another site I frequent a regula

"I'll Fly Away" by Robert Randolph, The North Mississippi All Stars, and John Medeski. Some great musical talents got together to record "The Word", a fun spiritual jam. If you're up for the challenge, try to tell the difference between Robert Randolph's steel and Luther Dickinson's slide guitar. It's not always easy.

Choctaw Bingo

First of all, I HATE corporate country. Absolutely detest it. But I LOVE the fringes of country music. Alt-country like much of Cracker's stuff, blues-country like much of Delbert McClinton's stuff, soul-country like much of Lyle Lovett's stuff, rocking folk-country like John Hiatt. The lines are so blurred the categories are meaningless. And that's a good thing.James McMurtry sees frequent ro

Dave Alvin's Nine Volt Heart

A wonderful, nostalgic song about a time when transistor radios were our tickets to the musical world. "Plastic Silver Nine Volt Heart, click it on and let the music start..."This song was cowritten by the legendary Dave Alvin and Rod Hodges of New Orlean's great band The Iguanas. It can be found on Alvin's Ashgrove, and The Iguanas "Nine Volt Heart". Both versions are excellent, and both CDs a
