WHERE MUSIC LISTENS TO YOU

Thinking Thoughts...

1) Amy Winehouse has the kind of voice that just beats you down slow 'til you're punch-drunk and have no idea where you and how you got there. "Rehab" is stuck to head like a really sticky postit ducttaped and stapled three times over.2) Augustana's song, "Boston", is a pretty serviceable indie-rock ballad. Not great, not bad either. What gets under my skin is that damn video. The half-promo for MTV's Vanity Central 101 "reality" show, The Hills. WTF? The quotes of the superficial girls whining about the superficial guys who dump them for other superficial girls is the absolute zenith of annoying.3) I heard the rest of Mika's "Life In Cartoon Motion" and now I have to check my sexuality at the door and say I'm in love with this artist. 4) Beyonce needs to stop acting. I've been a big defender of pop music for pop's sake and I like Beyonce's voice, but I really can't take this whole "B-Day/Dreamgirls" phase of her career. The video for listen is so unbelievably bad. It's like watching a plane crash. I just sit there entranced at the tragedy unfolding before my eyes. There's no real person there on the screen anymore. Just some THING posing and gyrating with every note that forces its way out of her throat. So sad....5) Speaking of R&B Divas, did I mention Amy Winehouse? 6) Very few things impressed me after watching a week of videos on VHI and MTV. Silversun Pickups' "Lazy Eye" video was cute. Justin Timberlake can really dance up a fuckin' storm. I want to plug into the matrix and come saying "I know dancing like Justin". "The Black Parade" was a nice looking video, but I have a soft spot for Tim Burton puppet lookalikes and who could deny the starpower of Lukas Haas. I realized KT Tunstall's kinda cute. And so is Corinne Bailey Rae. And Lily Allen is funny!7) I turned off VH1 and MTV and turned on this:

  1. MrFrost says I agree with you on the amy winehouse. I disagree on the music video/singing beyonce part (you can bash away at her acting, i dont necessarily disagree with you)... I think the song for listen is great, the video is at typical performance piece... but it works... The video for deja vu was great, she danced her ass off. Im not a HUGE beyonce fan, I havent even listened to her entire album. But I think shes a lightning rod for hate because shes currently the face of new womens R&B. Being in her position is like being the quarterback of an NFL team... you'll get too much credit for things that go good... and you'll get too much critisizm than you really deserve. shes a great performer though, right now I dont see anyone doing what she does better than she does it.

  2. hawaiianpunch says I'm a big fan of Beyonce's music on the first album. The second album didn't do much for me. I didn't see any progression. I didn't even see someone sticking to a good formula. "B-Day" was OK at best. I was only reacting to the hugely bad first video for "Listen". The song is not bad either, but watching her epileptic seizures on stage in that thing and all the wierd gyrating goes against the song and is actually detrimental to the song. Just to say, the second video with her singing in mostly closeup on the white background with the scenes from "Dreamgirls", was much better. I actually believed her singing in that one. I got the message there. They need to get rid of that first one.
