A first listen of The Shins, addictively catchy tune "Australia" leads one to believe this is the happiest, most go lucky tune on the planet. It is the musical equivilant to laffy taffy. So sweet, so damn good, it just hits the spot.
A second listen and you realize the song is about a stripper. Yeah, yeah, there's been debate on the actual meaning of the song. Some say it's James Mercer's own insecurities about feeling like a less than stellar artist...other's grasp at threads, concluding it is a tribute to Steve Erwin. I say, definately a stripper...most likely, one seen down under. Anyhow, as gritty as the actual lyrics may be, it is still the sweetest sounding song ever. I can't listen without smiling. It's not humanly possible.
I do feel that the overly happy musicianship of the song is compeletely fitting. From experience, I can soundly say it's pretty damn hard to stay depressed here, even in the bleakest of situations.
Anyhow, I felt I should pay tribute to the pole dancing hussy who made this song possible and give her a name. It's Candy, which I feel fits. Sweet, sugary, yet rots your teeth in the long run.
God I love The Shins.
As I sit here creating a profile on yet another networking site, I would just like to say that I am wasting away another sunny Saturday. I could use these afternoon hours to go for a quick surf or maybe finish my christmas shopping, but no. For now I will sit on the net enjoying the great indoors.
Due to the recent aquisition of an Itouch, I have had the pleasure of reaquainting myself with my music library and I feel like this is the weekend to rediscover everything I loved so much in the past, be that distant or, well, not so distant.
The big standout album for me has to be Interpol's "Our Love to Admire". There's no doubt that Interpol had already permeated a permanent spot in my top five favorite bands of all time, but there newest album had failed to really garner the emotional reaction I recieved when listening to "Antics" and "Turn on the Bright Lights". That is until just now.
I get it. I didn't before. Now I definately get it. It's slower...there are no "PDA'S" or "Evil's" ....It's an entire album of "Leif Erickson's", which I always felt was their best song anyway. So I'm still not sure why it took me 5 months to sit down and fucking listen. Just listen. It was so worth it.
I think the best way I can describe it has already been said by Zooey Deschanel's character in Almost Famous,
"Listen to this album with the lights off and a candle lit, and you will see your future..." I'm sure that wasn't an exact quote because I am shit at quoting movies but you can get the gist.
So maybe I'm exaggerating a little...but do it, at the very least you will come close :)

Of the many communities I have involved myself with on the Net, mog is by far my favorite. For me this is my respite from the ego political world where I can just submerge in music. Because of Mog, I have dug out a lot of my old stuff and listened to it with a new vantage point. I have also been hit right between the eyes by Interpol. Great band and I don't get tired of listening to them. I found your Mog by going to the Interpol mog page and listening to your post. Cheers and although I have not been mogging for long, welcome.

The Shins are great, no doubt. Though, I believe the musical equivilent of Laffy Taffy is the song Laffy Taffy by that one hit wonder, turned popular by ringtone downloads. ughh. haha, sorry so off topic!
Haha good point....alright maybe the equivilant of skittles.
Skittles, yes, let's settle on skittles...hehe.
