WHERE MUSIC LISTENS TO YOU

Does this make me a bad music fan?

I understand that she's a legend and all, but I really can't get into Patti Smith. I don't know why. I tried to listen to Horses again today, and it just didn't work for me. I can respect her contribution, but I guess at the same time I don't have to listen to it.

  2. gympumpkin says That's sort of how I feel. If someone puts one of her albums on I won't run screaming from the room, but I'm never going to choose to listen to it on my own I don't think.

  3. Dale says Nah, just means you don't like Patti Smith. I don't think there are any absolutes, as in bands that one MUST like to be considered a fan of good music.

  4. gympumpkin says Thanks, Dale. Sometimes I just wonder if there's something wrong with me. But there isn't. :)

  5. celtichris says The amazing thing about Patti Smith, I've found, is the Emperor's (Empress's?) New Clothes thing around her. Almost nobody I've found actually listens to her or likes her, but few are willing to admit it. And so everyone keeps talking about what fine new clothes the empress is wearing. But she's sort of the musical equivalent of Brussels Sprouts -- everyone says they're good for you, but no one can stand eating them. Give me a few more minutes and I can think of some more metaphors to mix in there.

  7. deanajean says I listen. And I love some of it. Horses in particular. "Gloria", "Redondo Beach" and "Land..." are some favorites. I like Easter too; "Babelogue/Rock N Roll N*****R and "Because the Night" are highlight there. I have also have Gone Again, but only listend to the "Summer Cannibles" track which reminds me of Tennesse Williams, but then maybe it's supposed to. Here's a tidbit - the song "Land: Horses/Land of a Thousand Dances" was used to great effect in an episode of the Fox show, Millennium. The Apocolyptic imageey and all you know. I can't remember if they used all 9+ minutes of it, but I was still impressed. Things I know are good but don't really listen too include, Sonic Youth and (gasp) Joy Division.

  8. gympumpkin says deanajean - I feel the same way about Sonic Youth that I do about Patti Smith. I don't hate them, but I don't really love them as much as others seem to either.

  9. lemontwist says I agree. There are lots of great bands that I respect but wouldn't sit down and listen to on my own. At least you give 'em a try and find out what you like and don't like.

  10. Mike the Knife says I like "Dancing Barefoot" and "Because the Night," I don't mind "Redondo Beach," and I don't bother with the rest. It's all about the song, because I'm not so big on her voice or most of her poetry. (There goes my hip, urban cred...)

  12. debi says I like Patti Smith - (my mog shows that she's #1 in my digital collection) BUT I know she's not everyone's taste. When my daughter was 20 I took her to see Patti at the Fillmore in San Francisco - she definitely didn't see the artistry that I do...but then I don't understand much of her emo tastes either ....
