There was a bowling alley a couple of blocks from my high school, so we had 3-week bowling units in gym class. At least we did until the bowling alley burned down.
Anyway, during my sophomore year I started borrowing records from the library again. I did it when I was a kid to listen to children's music. I borrowed a couple of Elton John records to give them a new listen. Having been born in the mid-70s I heard his music all the time growing up. I decided to go back to it, have a listen for myself, under my terms, and I loved it. I quickly fell in love with "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" , which I remembered from when I was a kid, but I never knew what it was called.
Back to the bowling alley. One day my gym teacher decided he would allow us to play the jukebox in the bowling alley while we were bowling. Of course I was the first one up there. "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" was on it, so I played it. A few of my classmates were taken aback. Several asked how I could possibly like such a song. I think I answered with something like, "How could you NOT like it?" Losers.

good for you musical POP pressure.. typical when yoiu are growing up. One of my iittle secrets was I need to express myself but was very shy growing up.. so I became this huge guy with my weightlifting that I got to the point where no matter what I did , everyone thought it was cool, because I was bigger than them.. LOL True story! Good on you mate for not needing to be The Hulk and sticking with your tastes!
Thanks! A lot of kids at my high school had no appreciation for anything that was released before a year or two earlier. I had a small handful of friends who listened to Simon and Garfunkel with me :)
Good for you, Andrea!
We stand by our pop and we shall not be bullied!
No we shall not!
complete musical losers.
but then again, you know how i feel about 70's elton john.
i think i was lucky in that i hung around with a group of outcasts who had music that connected us. going to a wealthy private parochial school and being from "the wrong side of the tracks" was one strike against me, but then i was friends with the theatre kids, the good students, the punks and goths, and the two boys who were gay.
i actually vividly remember this song, and 'don't let the sun go down', playing at full blast in the backstage area of our little theatre where we all used to eat lunch...and singing along to it...loudly.
and yeah...to you and anna's sentiment...we shall not!
this was the perfect song to start my morning with...thank you, andrea.
Bah, so much of high school is trying to deal with those who can only allow others to think as they do. It can become a robot factory if you don't stay true to yourself. Good on ya. :)
we are not robots. :)
Kraftwerk begs to differ. ;)
hee.
our bowling alley had a similar fate. one day it snowed so hard that the roof collapsed. that was a sad day.
what!? you got to go on gym class field trips to the bowling alley!? jeez now i can see why some people liked their gym class.
hell, I loved the whole double album
loved cranking up "Funeral for a Friend" on my Dad's stereo
Rattle the walls!!!!!!!
Funeral for a Friend/Love Lies Bleeding is my favorite Elton John song.
tough to pick a fav, but that one (those two?) is/are right up there in the top 10
GP, I'm a loser YET I also love Elton John. It is an eternal paradox. We played I'm Still Standing at our recent wedding party. Everyone went crazy. QED = Elt's good.
