WE DO THE MASHED POTATO AND THE FUNKY CHICKEN

Free concert

I won tickets to see the Gin Blossoms, Shawn Mullins, and Josh Kelley on Thursday night.I didn't even know the Gin Blossoms were still together, let alone the fact that they released an album this year. Huh. You learn something new every day. So I'm listening to their new album on Napster right now. I'm only on the second track, but so far it's okay. I don't know that I'd run out and buy it right this second, but I'm not disliking it, you know? I am not very familiar with Shawn Mullins. I'll listen to some of that next.I have never heard of Josh Kelley. Has anyone else? What's he like?

  1. Manos says Shawn Mullins = Rockabye. Oif. I hated that song. Macarena Factor of 1.2 for me.

  2. SatisfiedMind614 says I would go just to hear 'Hey Jealousy'....what a great pop song! I liked that Lullaby song by Shawn Mullins...i think that is all I ever heard though.

  3. gympumpkin says I'm sure "Hey Jealousy" will be the highlight of the night for me :) I honestly don't remember any of their other songs. This album I'm listening to now is along that vein, just not as upbeat as that song. A bit slower. But still okay. I probably wouldn't have paid for tickets to this show, but since they are free I'll go and I'm sure it will be fun :)

  4. SatisfiedMind614 says Oh no way...passing up a free show is bad concert karma!

  6. gympumpkin says Well, I also have free tickets to see Cold War Kids on Friday, but I have so much going on that I'm not going to go to that one. But I figured I'm going to this free show, so I'm hoping I still have good concert karma.

  7. lemontwist says Gin Blossoms is a good show. I saw them in June, I think, with my sister. I wasn't aware that they were back together either, but they've released an album recently, Major Lodge Victory. It's pretty good. It's no Congratulations I'm Sorry, but still solid work. I also saw about three songs at a show they put on in Virginia (tunnel traffic prevented my sister and I from getting there on time), but to make up for it we got our picture taken with Robin Wilson. :) I'm definitely not a fan of that Rockabye song, but let me know if Shawn Mullins has any better songs. I always feel bad when an artist releases such a crappy radio single, because I never feel motivated to check out their other stuff, and you never know they've got a few hidden gems. Most times radio singles are a lot different than the rest of a musician's body of work. Have fun at the show!! :)

  8. gympumpkin says Thanks lemontwist! I'm not very good at writing up concert reviews, but I'll try to post one. They are usually along the lines of "so-and-so was awesome" or whatever. But it's better than nothing I guess.

  9. lemontwist says Hahaha, yeah, writing concert reviews is tough. I generally like most of the shows I see, so writing "it was good" is usually what I do. I find it's easier to write about something if it really sucks.

  10. gympumpkin says Exactly. Or it is easier for a band that I'm really familiar with, when I know all of their songs and such. With the Gin Blossoms I think "Hey Jealousy" is the only song I know by title. I can't even report a track list. But I can at least say if I enjoyed it or not :)
