I had a great time playing in Austin. Ahmad-Jamal (my drummer) and I played the yearly "Pirate Elvis Party". We all had eye patches, fried peanut butter banana sandwiches (i didn't venture this, but there was a line!) and elvis glasses. Kitsch is fun when not in excess....
We were invited to play by Yarrr PR's Becki Carr. We like her the best!! There was a great 'vibe' at this cool reggae spot on 6th St., great people at this party, industry and civilians alike! (especially the kid from Chile, god I'm horrible w/names).
Anyway, saw a gazillion bands. Here are the ones that stood out:
Two Gallants White Denim Crystal Antlers Mai Shi Minmae Modern State Rogue Wave Helio Sequence Pity Party
I saw a review of the festival in the LA Weekly (where I live) and it was embarassing. They spent more time on scoring weed from a homeless person than on the music. Lame. This year California bands seemed to shine, that made me proud.
here's a quick mention we got in the Austin Weekly : http://www.austinchronicle.com/gyrobase/Issue/story?oid=oid%3A602007
It's a cool writer, Melanie Haupt, who takes us through day one of SXSW.
Hey everyone. Please listen to a new track from my EP "Midnight Manor" available now at myspace.com/chasefrank via mail order, MP3, or check your local store. thanks!

THEE MORE SHALLOWS--live at The Echo Wednesday, May 9, 2007 reviewer: anonymous / Musician Reviews (coming soon)
The Echo shook and shuttered with sardonic truth-sayers THEE MORE SHALLOWS last Wednesday. This show was just a brief stop on their US tour, after a four day turn around from their European tour. They opened with a classic from a previous album, "Freshman Thesis", which builds to luscious boominess and then trails off with beautifully dark and haunting violins, unexpectedly. Their dynamics are mesmerizing, surprising us with what they do next. I love how this band is unafraid of silence, delicateness, space and crescendos, which they use often and well. The tension in this music matches our times. It sounds of war, bittersweet frustration, dark humor and ultimately compassion—which shines through in their awareness of the details. The songs are stories, anthems even, and fantastic snapshots, spun from reality, yet highly graphic.
The electronic beats they play with are exacting, thick and fun. Their new record: "Book of Bad Breaks" is a true headphone album, begging not to be interrupted. I'm especially fond of "Night at the Knight School", and "Oh Yes, Another Mother", the later being a pretty dark and haunting story of murder—not what it appears to be on first listen. The live version of "Oh Yes, Another Mother" was a blow-out with live double drummers, mid-song instrument changes and an extended instrumental that was a polyrhythmic spree! "White Mask" builds heavily, and ends with an innocent laugh on the record. There were lots of cries for 'one more' but they were shewed off the stage to make way for the next band...oh well. One thing the band is not—shallow.

Dude, kitsch is ONLY fun when it's in excess!
no, kitsch is only fun when it's on your cutains in the form of corn cobs.
ha ha, you guys are funny. I live in LA, kitsch at the Yarrr PR show wasn't in excess, just right....but in LA kitsch can be like a John Waters nightmare! But i'll take the see through elvis curtain becki!
