During my time at college, I've come to the realization that life has a pattern, a flow, a rhythm. Everyone has a different plan, a different drummer to march to. This rhythm usually expresses itself in the music that one listens to regularly. There's a beat that I'm drawn to in music. It's not something that I'm good at describing, but I know it when I hear it, as do those closest to me. I like to think my music taste is fairly diverse, but there is a common rhythm among the majority of my music collection. It starts and ends with *Guster*, especially *Lost and Gone Forever*. I've branched out to *Ugly Duckling*, *The Fratellis*(love that Ipod ad) and *!!!*. Similarly, when I hear certain songs, it draws out the memory of a friend. After two years, I've grown to recognize the beats of my roommate's taste. Initially I knew she liked *Fall Out Boy*. After listening to *Under the Cork Tree* ad-nauseum, I realized that yes, she probably likes emo, but I've also turned her onto *The Dirty Hepburns* and *Jack Johnson*, among others. Is this a unique phenomenon? Perhaps this is just my way of coping with life- to relate everything back to my first love. Without music, nothing makes sense to me. I know that we usually determine a person's attractiveness by subconsciously looking for aspects of others in their face. I think that I also look for aspects of a friend's musical identity in my own. Here's a good example of my beat: *"Dumb it Down"* by *Ugly Duckling*.It's a toe-tapper, and it makes me want to dance and sing along.
