WHERE MUSIC IS WORTH MORE THAN MONEY

Artist:

I'm in the midst of one of those exciting/overwhelming moments where I come upon a virtual treasure palace of music I wasn't that aware of. Part of me wonders why I haven't found any of it before, but the rest is just happy to start digging in.

Through various web trawlings, I kept coming across the name of Gilles Peterson, an English DJ who (I now realize) has been working for almost two decades in search of the "perfect beat," encompassing music from Brazil, Africa, Asia, the US, etc etc. All these terms I hadn't really understood or heard, like "Acid Jazz," "Rare Groove," or "Broken Beat" turn out to refer to music that I generally like when I hear it. There's just so freaking much of it!

Fortunately eMusic has some seemingly key labels on board - Ubiquity, BBE, Stones Throw, Ninja Tune, and Peterson's own Brownswood. But it's a little alarming how much else is still out there to be heard. So if any kind Moggers come across this and know of some good comps or other starting points, I'm all ears.

Gilles Peterson is quiet know in Europe. As I don't live in England, I never listened to his radio-show, but I know of it, what means, that it really has a reputation. Regarding the genres, that you just discovered, when you wrote this post: The mentioned genres are different genres and not the same. Acid Jazz is a term that is hardly used any more. We already had some discussions last year here on MOG about that. Essentially IMHO it is jazz that is "electronically enhanced". There's also a English label called "Acid Jazz", that released a lot of this kind of music. Meanwhile similar music is called "Nu Jazz" for whatever reason and I didn't read the term "Acid Jazz" any more for a long time on the sites of official record dealers and the like. Anyway, this music is principally new, not older than the 90s of the last century, I would say. I understand under Rare Groove and Rare Funk (aka Deep Funk) music, that is quiet old, and has to be dug out of some dusty crates. I don't know much about Rare Groove, but Rare Funk is the Funk, that was produced from 1966 - 1973 in the U.S. following a very good DJ from around here, who organizes the "Soulexplosion", a club event specialized on this kind of music. They hate the funk that was produced after that period and began to incorporate "disco influences", whatever they want do denominate with disco. I can only say that Rare Funk is pretty raw and unpolished and develops an enormous energy on the dancefloor, what the "discoesque" music does not in this degree. James Browns releases of that time also belong to this genre, most of the other artists I and I guess 99,xx % of the world has never heard of as the Beatles were just too dominant at that time. I guess with Rare Groove it's a similar thing, but I'm not sure. Look at my MOG posts from the last year fore some Acid Jazz and on mktackabery mog page. Recently I posted a bit of so called Nu Jazz, which you will find fast, as I don't post that much.
