I dunno why but I fail to see anything interesting in contemporary music.
Maybe its because:
1. There are just too many artists to listen to.
2. Genres have evolved radically to coalesces with other genres and then split again to form new different friggin genres.
3. The "new" and "emerging" artists aren't dead yet. I know this would be a bummer for concert ticket sales but... I like listening to dead people. No media spins, no Michael Jackson - esque humiliations, they played, they died, they got famous.
4. I've been dedicating way too much time on old shit. Incidentally, I just love them to death.
5. Well even if some of the artists I've been listening to aren't dead (yet) they've been around for a considerable amount of time to qualify them as original or track-worthy.
6. Maybe I'm just too much of a grouch to appreciate the offspring of rock. Don't get me started about rap.
That being said, I don't HATE new artists per se, I just dont find that inquisitiveness to browse more of their songs when I'm listening to them.
And now here I have (up to an extent) exhausted my limited supplies of music from my favourite artists, and don't know which direction to go. Offcourse these artists have a high replay value time and again but you know the law of diminishing marginal returns act on EVERYTHING. It's good to hear something that you liked but haven't heard in a considerable elapse of time. But something that plays in the radio 5 times a day every friggin day of the week makes you want to kill something. or someone.
I guess the point of my note is.. there isn't actually any point at all.
I'm just a bit flustered up that I've subscribed to Rhapsody all access and my choice in music kinda limits my choices.
Well have a good day. I hope the Ramones make me feel better.

Now that I'm on the 14-day trial I can scarcely get a Rhapsody track to play; worked like a charm when it was no-strings free. Still, I loved your post, and I'm hoping (eventually) the cybergods will let me hear the Soundgarden.

Runo,
The cybergod's might have heard your pleas but there's a chance that their replies reached your junk folder, thanks to the all powerful Spam Guard.
Have you tried this gem of a site called Deezer ? I've been using it for the past year and although it might not have EVERYTHING under constellation Rock, it still beats paying $15 for your rhapsody all Access subscription.
Make haste now, Soundgarden awaits you.

I'll check it out. At the moment, Rhapsody only recognizes a former me who is on the free subscription, and of course it works. But how do log in to the new account? I don't know, I'm an omnivore musically, so all-access might be heaven on earth. As for genres - - there is no god bu god, so genres proliferate and bleed and fall away like religious sects and denomination. But I pay it no mind. I've pretty much decided that music is THE universal language - - who needs English, who nees Esperanto. End of rant. Must crack the Rhapsody code before bed.

lol runo.
If you're like me and can do with 3 less marboro packs a month, you'd pay the $12 bucks for full access.
Its under account management> manage subscriptions :D
oh and if u crack the code..(looks around and whispers) let me know:D

I know this post is a little old, but I saw your soundgarden picture, so I had to stop on by. I think you made some really good points in your post. Already at 22, I find myself so very disconnected with what's out there today. It just doesn't interest me. As time goes on, I tend to go backwards down the timeline of music. Kinda strange...
