MUSIC SIGNPOSTS ON THE WEB'S LONELY ROAD

Artist:
Album:

Played to death by my old man when I was about this high (hand hovering about 2 and a half feet above the ground or for those of you in countries with more sensible units of measure, around .8 meters), Boz Scaggs was an early staple in my household. Often mistaken later in life for that song by Billy Joel who's title I did not know, Lido Shuffle stands as one of those songs with the hooky whoas and ohs that a person cannot shake for days on end. No matter how much of a front about the hipness and obscurity of my music collection that I try to build, its songs like these that are what I might call guilty pleasures (GP) to preserve an air of haughty-toitiness.

Why bring this all up now? Silk Degrees has been re-released today. That and I caught myself rocking out to another classic GP, Woman Form Toyko by Deep Purple. My brain was telling me to take my Arcade Fire and stick it somewhere devoid of light. Hopefuly my brain meant the glove compartment.

Sing it with me now

Lido, whoa-oh-oh-oh He's for the money, he's for the show Lido's waitin' for the go Lido, whoa-oh-oh-oh He said one more job ought to get it One last shot 'fore we quit it One more for the road

...yours too? whenever I hear that high hat 'n bass guitar plucking intro to "(Dirty) Lowdown", now, no matter where I'm at, my left eye starts twitching...my dad LOVED that LP...I always used to wonder what that chick on the other side of the bench had just said to him...

It's worth remembering that Boz Scaggs started out as an ubercool hippie guy, one of the original members of the Steve Miller Band (back before Steve also sacrificed his cred at the altar of commercial success). He was always, in my mind, hovering about a half-step above his material in this stage of his career - it may have been cheese, but it was a triple-creme Brie.

I didn't recognize "Lido Shuffle" by song title, but as soon as I heard that "Lido - whoa-oh-oh-ohhhh" I knew it. And now it is _so_ stuck in my head. One of my GP bands is Journey. Everyone's gotta have at least one (I have about 17).

Amazing how a song can get stuck in your head just by reading the lyrics. I met Boz Scaggs once, when I was a sophomore in high school and working as a volunteer tour guide at the admissions office of my prep school. I gave him and his son a tour of the campus, and had absolutely no idea who he was. My parents were impressed though.

kat3260, big word on the Journey guilty pleasure. And how great is this video for Separate Ways? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OyWFa7L4s-0

Gotta love the keyboard on the wall. Other guilty pleasures: Hall & Oates, REO Speedwagon, and Shalamar.
