In the category of musician collectives and geographically centered side projects, our brethren to the north seem to have the US beat. With the successes of Broken Social Scene and the New Pornographers already in the country's back pocket, soon arrived the additional folklore that surrounds city centres such as Montreal. A city where casual musician friends show up at a venue to play an impromtu show and end up becoming one the most hyped indie bands in quite awhile (Wolf Parade for those scoring at home). Again, a set of somewhat famous friends from various bands are set to release a group effort titled 'Beast Moans'. The 'super-group' of Daniel Bejar (Destroyer, New Pornographers), Spencer Krug (Wolf Parade, Sunset Rubdown) and Carey Mercer (Frog Eyes) is calling itself Swan Lake which fortunately does not refer to the band's plans for performing in unitards during their tour dates. Early word is that the album will continue in the recent trend of above average independant albums migrating from the great north. Take a sample listen: All Fires | The FreedomStateside, I have stumbled upon a few regionaly based collaborations but few that seem to grab as much attention. The Racontuers popped up in my own backyard most recently with a thouroughly enjoyable album which garnered commercial airplay mostly due to Jack White's presence. This is also why they are not necessarily thought of as a collective of like-minded midwesterns but instead, as Jack White's other band ... the one with a bass player. Where are the US musician collectives and super groups not of the Audioslave/Velvet Revolver kind?
