Forgotten 80's Gem

Posted over 4 years ago
Hello fellow music lovers and musicians. As my first post on MOG, I'd like to direct your absoulte attention to a forgotten 80's pop star named Nik Kershaw. The man was responsible for the US Top 40 hit "Wouldn't It Be Good", amognst a number of hits in the UK. The man had an amazing ear for melody and structure, creating such classics as "The Riddle" and "Wide Boy" (Both HUGE hits in the UK).However, I would like to direct your attention to a rather unknown Kershaw tune from his Radio Musicola album called "Running Scared". I believe the song was originally written for the film of the same name, but never used in it's release. This is 80's synth/rock/pop at it's very best. Listen to the clarity in the horns, the little programming nuances... and lets not forget Nik's amazingly unique vocal. It's a unknown classic. As a 21 year old, Nik Kershaw and his music from the 80's was a bit before my time. However, I still managed to grow up on this music through my father's influence. Nik Kershaw's songs will always hold a special place for me.

  1. dermahrk says I got into Nik backwards, so to speak. Heard a track from the 00's on a MOJO sampler, then bought his new CDs. Liked them so much I went back and bought his 80's stuff, which I think pales in comparison to the newer material. Diff strokes, diff folks.

  5. goodnewsmyfriend says Glad I could inform you about it! It's a wonderful album. Do you own his first album, "Human Racing"? It's the one Kershaw release that I do not have in my collection.

  6. dermahrk says Yup, sure do. Yesterday I looked for "You Have To Laugh", first on Amazon, which didn't list it. Then I broke down and bought it off of iTunes. I really prefer to have the full physical package (liner notes and all) but now I'm not sure that it is anything BUT a digital release. Anyway, I never would've known about it if not for you, so thanks again.
