Crusading for Evangelicals

Posted about 4 years ago
Evangelicals are an Oklahoma-based foursome fronted by creative force Josh Jones. At once rollicking, loopy, and sweetly melodic, their 2006 debut "So Gone" is an unusual ride of an album that contains a handful of tunes that made it onto nearly every mixtape I made this past year. While frequently compared to fellow-Okies Flaming Lips and Starlight Mints, Evangelicals' best asset perhaps is in the space they give themselves to play around with non-formulaic changes in tempo and atmosphere within each song. "Another Day," "Here Comes Trouble," "Hello Jenn, I'm a Mess," and "What an Actress Does Best" are standout tracks that showcase the group's creative haberdashery. The songs swing from quirky, ramshackle jams to unexpectedly pretty sleepytime melodies apt to leave you with one foot in a dream and the other pogoing around the room. The strength of this first release bodes well for their upcoming album _The Evening Descends_, which is set to drop on January 22nd. More tracks from the debut, and a sneak preview of their newest in comments. Enjoy!

  3. dachmo says MOG is a many mysterious things lately. This is one of the bands I wanted to ask you about, being the recipient of one of your great mixes, but now I don't have too. I'm really liking Skeleton Man as well, the last one doesn't want to play for me though. Great! (said in my best Scottish accent)

  6. dachmo says In between my coughing fits, I'm able to get a few minutes of listening in. I was much healthier as a pack a day booze hound then I am in my current formation. Your CD's have been great. Still not working? ...F'n MOG!

  8. goodmusiconly says Oh, you're sicko? I'm sorry, D :/ The smokes were probably killing anything that snuck inside, including your lungs. Don't go back! A little whiskey might be good for your throat though. ;) *Oatmeal* Thanks for coming by - glad you're liking it!

  13. Lowdown says This is great. Great name. Great sound...and yes a lil' Starlight Minty. But I think much better. Why do I never get tired of weird 70's synths lurking in the background of any song or music? BTW-where do I sign up for my GMO mix?

  14. Bartleby says It's hard to resist such a tempting offer when it's presenting with words like "haberdashery" and "ramshackle" culminating in our gingerly standing "with one foot in a dream and the other pogoing around the room." Brilliant post and enticing music. Ta!

  15. goodmusiconly says *TBoom* Yeah, it's there in both the music and voice, though Jones' singing is a bit more warbley than Coyne's ... that's something that doesn't strike me as well on the new track, but overall I think its pretty good. *Mike* Uh oh, with you I would normally be preaching to the choir but something tells me you haven't been converted! ;) *Lowdown* Great, glad you like. I'm a sucker for a little weird synthiness as well. The sign-up for the GMO mix is right here - I've got you down! (and watch out, once I start EMCDing I can't stop!) *Bartleby* Thanks for the nice words; the mental thesaurus must have been working while I wrote this. Nice to see you here, Cheers!

  17. Marigold says You have this knack of finding these bands that are not immediate for me. They have enough to pique my interest and upon further listens I find myself swallowed up. Helpless to the music's inner power that creeps up on me over repeated listens. There is just enough in this ramshackle mess to motivate me to give this some more time. Thanks so much E! You are the maestro of the Rocky Mountains.

  18. goodmusiconly says Amen, to both of you Mikes! :) Marigold, wow, that's quite a compliment (and it's going directly on my page)! Not becoming fully snagged the first time through is my ancient chinese secret. ;)

  20. ZenPop says Everyone's in search of musical Nirvana and here you are handing out roadmaps... I like the S'Mints... but had never heard Evangelicals (maybe I ignored them when they threw their votes to Huckabee and Thompson!)... Both of the first tunes you posted spoke to me... and they said: "Buy our cd you moron!"...This is great stuff (especially love Skeleton Man)... onto the next one... Thanks so much!

  21. goodmusiconly says John, you have as much a gift with giving compliments as you do with a paintbrush. :) And a nice political jab to boot, I know who to call to help me spread the good word. Glad you like!

  22. poebegone says omg i don't know this band and i love that song. (i think you know the resulting effect. ;D) ps- Flaming Lips and Starlight Mints. yeah, i hear it, and i agree it's "the space they give themselves to play around" - well put!
