The weekend doesn't always mean a break from work for me ... I'm self employed and am camped in front of my computer most hours of the day (admittedly I have to make up for hours that I've lost due to mogging, but this seems a small price to pay in exchange for sanity). But I'm heading to a friend's birthday celebration tonight, then I have a show (The Ponys) downtown tomorrow, so it's looking to be a relatively computer-free couple of days. I have The Specials on vinyl but the singles collection I bought from iTunes (felt like sacrilege!). *ketut* My friend Cara-lee in fourth grade was nutso for Bay City Rollers. You have no idea how many times I had to endure that song. ;) *Mark* Wow, another music fest? Looks like a fun one, have a great time. Do you plan on catching Evangelicals?

    Marigold says Have fun at the Ponys. Great song selection. I love the Specials. Any chance you were at the Skavovee Tour in Denver. I forget the venue but the line up was Skatalites, Special Beat, and Selector. It would have been 94ish? I might even be buthering the name of the tour and the line up but that is what I remeber. Hopefully you were there and can remember for me. :)

    goodmusiconly says Thanks guys. Whew ... Sunday night already? It has flown by. Mike, nope, never can get enough of the Specials! What kind of halloween trickery were you able to turn up? Marigold - I did not see the Skavoovee tour here (unfortunately), however, I did happen to catch Special Beat at Red Rocks around that time. That show was probably hands-down one of the most energetic performances by any band I have ever seen live ... they were great, and so much fun. As far as where "skavoovee" comes from, I found this tidbit for ya': "When New Orleans-style R&B fell out of favor by 1960, Jamaican artists began recording their own version of it. The music of ska is known for the placement of the accented guitar and piano rhythms on the upbeats. The word "ska" may have onomatopoeic origins in a tradition of poetic or possibly even musical rhythms. Guitarist Ernest Ranglin said that "the offbeat guitar scratching that he and other musicians played was referred to as 'skat! skat! skat!'" Some believe that Cluet Johnson coined the term. Bassist Johnson and the Blues Blasters were Coxsone Dodd's house band in the 50s and earliest 60s before the rise of the mighty Skatalites. In explaining the 'ya-ya' sound of the music & rhythm being made, the word 'ska' popped out. This may be because he greeted all his friends as 'skavoovee', perhaps imitating American hipsters of the era. One other theory is that it was merely an abbreviation of the term "speed calypso", which is arguably a fairly accurate description of the music." Here comes Monday... :)
