WHERE MUSIC LISTENS TO YOU

The Jesus & Mary Chain

Posted over 2 years ago
On Sunday night, I finally got to see a band that I never - at least after their break up in 1999 - thought I would get the chance to see live. In truth it's not that I didn't have the chance, before ... it's more that I didn't seize the opportunity the first time around. So when I learned last month that the Jesus and Mary chain were playing in Denver the weekend before Halloween, it took no more than a nanosecond for me to get online and buy tickets. The Jesus and Mary Chain were part of the staple music diet for myself and my friends back in the late 80s/early 90s. And together with bands like Catherine Wheel, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, Swervedriver, and the Chameleons, they were hugely influential for the group of musicians that were making the local Denver scene at the time. Back then, when we weren't studying for school, we would spend every free night supporting our musician friends, seeing live shows and partying like rock stars. One local band I was particularly fond of would fire up a fog machine before their show, making a murky soup of the room before launching into a full-bore sonic assault. It's because of this that the smell of dry ice sends me back like nothing else. So when the Jesus and Mary chain took the stage last night, emerging from a swirl of heavy atmospheric fog, it was like being thrown back in time. Just days before the show, there was a change in venue -- previously slated for the Fillmore Auditorium, there was apparently a lower number of ticket sales than expected, and thus it was moved to the smaller, more intimate Gothic Theatre. It's not the most remarkable, nor the most historic venue in town, but through time it has been host to a lot of my favorite shows, and I was really happy to hear that JAMC would be playing there instead. That, and the prospect of seeing the band with a couple hundred fans, as opposed to a thousand, was A-okay with me. So first on was a band out of California, Darker My Love. I have to say I went into it not expecting much, but I thoroughly enjoyed their brand of explosive psychrock. They're one of those bands you hear, knowing full well the material is not entirely original sounding, but it just doesn't matter because they rock it so well. Keep your ears peeled for "these lads":http://www.myspace.com/darkermylove ... If you have the chance to catch 'em live, *do.*And then came Jesus and Mary Chain ... now, I'd like to say I'm prepared with a setlist, but I'm not ... I was taking pictures and enjoying the show far too much to be taking notes. But what I can tell you is they played an assortment of tunes spanning their catalog ... "Never Understand," "Sidewalking," "Some Candy Talking," "April Skies," "Blues from a Gun," "Happy When It Rains," "Just Like Honey." There was a song or two in the batch that I would rather they had replaced with another, but the final song, "Reverence" was done with such down and dirty, raw intensity I was reeling the entire way home. 24 hours later and the song is still going through my head. The bottom line? I finally got my chance, and they *so* did not disappoint .... Ahhhhh, at last. Now for the Catherine Wheel reunion ...

  1. Pop Savant says Low Ticket Sales!!! What a shame...Saw them in April and was blown off my feet. Great is not enough to say how they were.

  3. Dale says Sounds utterly glorious. Love the pictures, they capture and expand on your words wonderfully. What I would have given to attend that show with you, to hear them play "Reverence" and revel in the wall of melody and noise. I'm getting teary-eyed just imagining the scene. I also love your description of the Denver scene back in the day. I never did get to see any shows at the Gothic, always wanted to. Saw lots of shows at the Bluebird, or the Ogden. Feels like I barely scratched the surface. Thanks so much for the review, e-sis. :-*

  5. Augusts1 says They had a two night stint in SF Fri & Sat at The Fillmore & neither show sold out. As much as I wanted to see them I just couldn't justify the almost $60.00 to see them when I got to see The Cure, BRMC, KOL,Gooferman, Metric, etc. at the Download Fest for just under $50.00 & The Fiery Furnaces for $15.00. Sounds like they put on an awesome set though & exceeded your expectations! Great review too.

  6. Marigold says I am so jealous. I would have loved to have seen that show. Like Dale, I never made it Gothic Theater when I lived in Denver. Thanks for the review, I was wondering how the show went. They didn't do Head On?

  7. brendanhalpin says It's really great the way that music from the past can still connect in a really visceral way. I remember when I saw the Pixies in '04, I was all choked up when they came out and started playing "Wave of Mutilation(UK Surf)". Not exactly the most moving tune, but there's just something wonderful about knowing that even though the kid you used to be is gone, the music they liked is still there.

  8. Lizziegreeneyes says I am beyond thrilled for you sis !!! What a magnificent experience... one I am certain you will never forget - one that will never dull with age !!! Like *brendan* I missed out on the first _WAVE_ of the +*Pixies*+ so when they toured in '04 I was on it like an Easter bonnet. & they didn't dissappoint in the least. I was on cloud 99 the entire evening & instantly transported back in time. Who cares the cost when it's a band that touched you as deeply as J&MC, August, for shame !!! I'm keeping my fingers crossed for Catherine Wheel - if they DO reunite... think I may have to fly out to Denver to see them - you'd save me a seat, right ;)

  9. jenny says Wonderful write-up, Erin. I thoroughly enjoyed it. What else are you seeing soon? (I was just looking at the local listings here, and it seems to be all third-rate metal and folksingers...not much in between.)

  10. goodmusiconly says whoops, apologies for the hit and run. I posted late then sacked out! *Mark* yeah, I was really surprised and a bit disappointed for them that there wasn't a larger turnout. I don't understand it, but people missed out. It was awesome, I'm so glad I was there. Very cool that you got to experience it as well... *walkingthecow* erm, okay - a second or two would be alright. ;) *Dale* Thanks for the nice words, bro. I thought of you as they were coming on, wishing you could'a been there. One of these days ... it'll happen. The Bluebird and The Ogden - both great venues which hold a lot of memories as well. The Gothic has changed a lot since the early days; they removed the bank seating, and added a balcony, making for a much better room. It's near and dear because I saw Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds there years ago ... and now this. Too cool. *David* I've rendered you speechless ... this cannot be good ;) and yes, that is precisely what I had for dinner. You're freaking me out! *August* The way I see it, I work really hard and I reward myself with the music I love, even if it is a bit pricey. Especially when it's a band I might never have the chance to see again. It's money well spent, darlin'! Danke. :) *Mike* yes they did! Wish you could have been here too. *Brendan* yeah, that happens to me sometimes, too. It's such a deep connection for us junkies. Pixies, dang that's another one I missed! grrrr. *Lizzie* There's *always* a seat reserved for you, know it!! I'd flip my gourd if we got to see Catherine Wheel together. I promise no cat fighting when we're both trying to get to Rob Thomas. ;) *Jenny* Thanks, that's really nice, coming from you. I am seeing The Ponys this Saturday (remember the Les Breastfeeders conflict, bummer!), then Film School on Monday, and The Hold Steady the following week. I'll have to cool it for a while after that...

  11. Neill says When they first started around 85, they had quite a reputation for violence and short sets. Remember seeing them headlining at the Electric Ballroom then, when getting searched by security was a still rare thing. Once inside the atmosphere was very menacing with frequent skirmishers in the audience. When the band came on they played a 16 minute set, a lot of stuff was thrown around, and that was it! (I enjoyed it immensely...) .

  12. Sturgell says GOODMUSIC ERIN! Feels like you haven't been around in a while. It's nice to see your up to some cool business. "The Jesus and Mary Chain were part of the staple music diet for myself and my friends back in the late 80s/early 90s. And together with bands like Catherine Wheel, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, Swervedriver, and the Chameleons, they were hugely influential for the group of musicians that were making the local Denver scene at the time." If that's true, then I want to goto 1991 Denver. It seems everyone I know in the Bay Area right now is making bluegrass, black metal, or polka dot noise-core stuff. .... Darker My Love sounds pretty slick, thanks for the tip.

  13. goodmusiconly says *Neill* I've heard those stories ... and wow, you got to be there. I bow at your feet! Thanks for the clip, that was great. Love the Reid brothers dishing it to the interviewer! "My favorite color is gold." LOL. *STURG!* I took a bit of a hiatus, but I'm back in the groove now. Thanks. Sheez, I wish _I_ could go back to 1991 Denver ... it was such a thriving scene - all different kinds of music, most of it really really good. I'm certain I wouldn't be a candidate for cochlear implants had I not lived through it, but I wouldn't trade that time for all the tea in China. I think you're in the right vicinity to see Darker My Love live? I wanted to post a song that I heard at the show, but it's new to me and I didn't know the title. I'll post when I figure it out...

  14. Dale says Um Erin, not to be stickler or anything, but the guy at the Catherine Wheel show that you and Lizzie would be fighting for is Rob +Dickinson+, not Thomas. Rob Thomas is from matchbox twenty; ewww! Good! Bad! Now that that's cleared up ...

  15. 1234chainsaw says This is my n+1th time of feeling envious of Neill. But Denver 1991 is still soo much better than Helsinki in 1991. I hadn't even heard of most of those bands then. Anyway, thanks for the write-up, Erin. I'm glad to hear they put on an exciting set and you're still riding that high. When I saw J&MC at a festival this summer (they played "Head On" then), their performance was much better, and they were more into it, than I had dared to expect, even Jim Reid, that rude sod. I'm happy I got the chance, although in the end I had to miss their SF shows. :(

  16. kat3260 says The colors in those pictures are gorgeous...my biggest Coachella regret is that I was pounding drinks in the beer garden during the JAMC set instead of watching it intently.

  17. goodmusiconly says hahaha, oh my gawd, that is funny Dale ... I *knew* something was wrong when I wrote that!! What was I thinking?? Whew, thanks for clarifying! I'd have a hard time living down being nutso for mb20, let alone señor Thomas ;) gots to remember to think before I speak! *Pekka*, It's too bad you couldn't catch them at home. But seeing them in Madrid? Well, I probably don't have to tell you how envious I am of that. I think it's cool that they're still smoking it (musically that is) at 50 years old ... I'll be really interested to hear the new album... *kat* I snapped so many photos because of the ever-changing lighting and the affects that were happening with the fog ... I was trying to shoot without a flash and unfortunately I couldn't get a higher "film" speed out of my camera, so many of them are blurred. But there are a few keepers anyway. But Ouch! - bummer you missed out at Coachella. You should have been pounding beers with Blair in front of the stage!

  18. Augusts1 says Erin, since you have the money & work hard then why not? That's just my personal philosophy on concerts. Since my funds are limited I want to squeeze as much as I can out of my concert dollar. It doesn't make my policy better than yours, if anything I'm jealous that you are able to do that, so good for you! Btw, I saw Catherine Wheel twice back in the day(they opened for Bob Mould & then Lush) & Pixies once. Catherine Wheel just totally shredded & were impressive live, so glad I saw them as well as Pixies!

  19. kat3260 says Well, sadly, I didn't know just how awesome they are until a little too late in the game...maybe there will be a next time...

  20. goodmusiconly says August, absolutely. To each his own, and there's nothing better than getting a big bang for the buck (I hope you don't think I was knocking you, I wouldn't do that). I am _extremely_ jealous of you over CW - let alone with Mould and Lush!! I am green. Glory days...

  21. annieander says "now, I’d like to say I’m prepared with a setlist, but I’m not … I was taking pictures and enjoying the show far too much to be taking notes." I understand what you mean...I have been to many concerts, and have comment on none. I just get overwhelmed at the aspect of doing all those other things when I am busy enjoying the show. You did just fine. It sounded wonderful.

  23. Dale says I'm trying to figure out the worst part; that you got the name wrong, that I went out and found _pictures_ to clarify, or that I can easily picture myself holding my e-sisters' purses as they head to the stage. Where's that qwute post again? I need to re-assert my masculinity! LOL

  24. goodmusiconly says Thanks, Annie. Agreed ... if the pieces come together and you can tell people about it, that's great. But job #1 is enjoying the show. That's usually all I can do ... *Ash* Woo! I can vouch for the multitudes ... we've missed your lovely face around these parts. It's so great to see you back here ... seriously. xxx *Dale* heh, the worst part by far was my error. If you were willing to hold your e-sis's accoutrements whilst we rushed the stage, that would only serve to strengthen your standing as the best e-bro evar! :)

  25. SamTheButcher says Glad to hear that they rocked! So..what Denver bands are you talking about from the early 90's? I wasn't here then, I was immersed in the San Diego scene, but I wanna hear all about it! :)
