I am having a heart attack

Posted over 4 years ago
When the Talking Heads _Speaking in Tongues_ first came out, I went to the record store and was among the lucky few who bought a limited edition vinyl of the album that was designed by none other than "Robert Rauschenberg":http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Rauschenberg.It was the prized album in my collection ... the vinyl itself was clear, and included several sheets of acetate upon which Rauschenberg's designs were printed ... I think one was blue, one was pink, and one was yellow. The sheets could be placed on the album in different layers to produce different colors and juxtapositions. The set snapped together inside a clear plastic container. As the story goes, fast forward five years, I am in art school and am a starving student. Totally broke ... I literally lived on Top Ramen for more than a year whilst going to school and making paltry earnings working at a retro-style soda fountain. And as one is inclined to do when one is young and penniless, I decided one day that I might get some extra cash by selling off some of my record collection. Not having any idea what any of it was worth, I stupidly took a large stack of albums to a record store on Colfax and sold off my wares. The clerk took my albums into a back room, evaluated them for a few minutes, and said he would take them all. He opened the register and handed me a pithy amount of cash (so little I can't even bear to tell you). All these years I've been upset with myself for having done so. There were a few albums in the stack that I desperately wish I still had. And the bad part, as you might surmise, is that the rare Talking Heads / Rauschenberg LP was included in with them.I haven't even wanted to know ... I've avoided the question all these years as to how much the album was worth. But after posting about "another collectible vinyl":http://mog.com/goodmusiconly/blog_post/118778 yesterday, then reading about Talking Heads on mog today, I decided to look it up. On E-Bay right now, there is a copy selling for $1000. My god, what have I done?Excuse me while I go hurl myself off a cliff.

  3. Augusts1 says Omg, that is such a f'ing cool LP Erin. Are you still alive or have you met your demise at the bottom of said cliff? $1000.00 sheesh. Love the inclusion of the TH line "my god, what have I done?!"

  5. fistula spume says If it's the place I'm thinking of I took a big stack of records to that place. I didn't really care about them and they weren't that rare. The guy behind the counter went through every single record. He told me to take them outside, go around the side to the alley, and throw them in the dumpster. I wasn't that attached to the records but still. A little rude. They were having a very lofty and holier than thou conversation about Led Zeppelin and sampling when I walked in. Sorry for your loss Erin. I've lost a lot of material valuables that I really regret losing. What can you do though? You still got the song! That person that has your copy probably doesn't play that record.

  6. Marigold says DO NOT JUMP! Please! I beg you. MOG does not want to loose you. Step back lets talk this out.... First off. Fountian shop. I will be dammed if I can not remember what the place is about 2 blocks from CIA. That has got to be the fountian shop you were talking about. What is its name? When I was at CIA, I worked at Arrow Liquour mart on Colorado Blvd. (next to a target and a strip joint?..Shotgun something? Billy's? Willies?) Talking heads rule and you basically f-ed up big time. I can't bust your chops to much though, I may have messed up myself. ;) I am assuming you sold it to Waxtrax?

  7. goodmusiconly says / boom / Thanks guys ... it is a sick feeling. But what can you do? Just a bummer that I didn't have the foresight. Youth and wisdom rarely go hand in hand. Sam, I can't even remember the name of that store ... it was a few blocks east of the capitol (so not wax trax). I feel like the guy knew what he had his hands on, but he was being a crum about it anyway. Sounds like the same place ... bummer for you too. Alas... Mike, Watsons - yep, that was me, serving up Cherry Coke's and banana splits, controlling the juke box (you know me). Hahaha, Shotgun Willies ... was that your happy hour stomping grounds? (I kid). I f*cked up, big time, you are right. Live and learn! Live and learn...

  8. Marigold says Watsons. Yep. I remember me and my friend ( www.mog.com/jeffhot ) used to go down to Watsons and buy $.99 Coors Quarts with the money we made from the cds we sold. Shotgun Willies? Yes, thats it. NO, I did not go there. I would just go to the viewing booths at the porn shop by the Bluebird Theater for happy 2 minutes. ( i can't believe I just said that )

  9. fistula spume says Yeah I think that's the place. It's either Jerry's Record Exchange or Independent Records. Can't remember. Those jive turkeys. No where near as awesome as Wax Trax. Wax Trax was the shit. I picked up crazy expensive vinyl on the cheap there. Of all the things I miss about Denver I think I miss that store the most. That and the King Sooper off Corona and 9th. You know at first I thought you were going to post that They Might Be Giants track "Fingertips". There's that one mini song where he playfully sings "I'm Having A Heart Attack".

With or without the coolest piece of vinyl I've ever laid my eyes upon... don't yell - it's the wine talking... Not checking the like post box (a rarity from me) cuz how can I like something that brings you pain !!!

  13. brendanhalpin says Not quite in the same league, but I shudder to think that I saw this for sale many times when it came out and balked at paying 20 bucks for it. In a similar vein, when I was just a lad, I bought an X-Men comic. I was disappointed in it, because it featured a bunch of characters I was unfamiliar with. So I ended up cutting it up and pasting some panels into a collage or something. This was the first appearance of the new X-Men and also now goes for over a thousand bucks. And I freakin' cut it into pieces....

  14. Dale says Oh my goodness E, that stinks on ice. At least you didn't end up donating plasma for cash ... did you? And you, Sam, and Mike need to stop bring up the cool places in Denver. I miss Colorado, and the greater access to record stores and concerts, more every day.

  16. goodmusiconly says Whew ... Back from my fall and feeling much better thank you. Sorry for the theatrics - just a momentary lapse of reason... Mike - Kitty's Arcade? You're on a roll. meow! Fisty - yep, it was Jerry's. and Queen Soopers, of course, quite familiar. Wax Trax is awesome to this day. And Twist and Shout moved right next door to the new Tattered Cover on Colfax, so that's a great corner now as well. Leftoverking - not as much as my rear end after that fall ;) Lizzie - Thanks doll. Grab your glass and come over girl! David - Not so. Do you really want to hurt me ... Do you really want to make me cry? Brendan - Ouch! It's all the same, I feel your pain. Dale - Never donated plasma, but honestly I should ... Type O and all... Sorry to make you 'home'sick bro. :/ Lyrikhan - you're right, that's enough abuse for one day. I'm helping myself to a glass of red and soft (red) sofa upon which to land...

  18. Mike the Knife says I like to think that time isn't holding us, and time isn't after us. But it's difficult when stuff like this happens - and we only realize it years later. Been thinking about shrinking the archives for some cash-ola. Then again, I'd need to cherry-pick. And who has the time to weed through the 1000s of discs when there's life to be lived?

  21. HelenMarie says Oh that's a crime! If it's any consolation... Just the other night, my husband got pretty upset after watching a show about how they make marbles. All of a sudden I hear him yell. Crap I knew I should've kept all my marbles. (the little round ones that you flick, but he's loosing the others gradually through out the years as well) Do you know how much some marbles are going for these days, it's unheard of really ! ? ! No ? No consolation, huh... hehehe ; )

I have had to make some major record dumps in my day...All I ask of the people buying the records is that they look at them carefully..As record junkies they should know how hard it is to turn in your babies and kids and their parents should be treated with respect!

  27. amber says you just had to look on ebay, didn't you? That is one of the saddest stories ever. And just the other day I was moaning that I don't still have my first piece of vinyl: and it was just the original double LP of the Star Wars Soundtrack. (will not go to ebay, will not go to ebay....)

  28. goodmusiconly says fisty - hahahaha :) Quite the pick up joint. What better place to go to overhear someone saying, "What a coincidence! You've got butter in your cart, and I've got a copy of 'Last Tango in Paris' at home!" Mike - Take yourself to the river and wash yourself of the notion that you should sell off some of your music. I mean, if you want to rid yourself of the "Banana Splits":http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Banana_Splits Christmas album, I won't hold you back, but otherwise it just aint worth it! Anna - Well, I feel like a million bucks anyway, and that's what counts :) Sunshine - your husband lost his marbles? not good... ;) Cody - thanks, good point. Respect is most def. in order. You know, I just am so glad I didn't ever make a list of the ones I got rid of. Ignorance is bliss in this case. Amber - Hah, you didn't think I couldn't resist that carrot now, did you? The "news is good":http://cgi.ebay.com/Star-Wars-Soundtrack-1977---double-album_W0QQitemZ320170756720QQcmdZViewItem, so far anyway ... But the question is, could you ever stand to hear it again?

  29. amber says LOL! That's hilarious! Are you sure they didn't misplace a decimal or two. I mean, that's a gem, that is! I wouldn't listen to it...much. (funny side story: in 4th grade I was in after school gymnastics and I did a floor routine to one track off this album--and the needle kept skipping on a certain part where I had to put my arm over my head. So I kept repeating the same move 8-10 times until someone fixed the record. I was terrible to begin with and that must have made me look like I had a nervous tic or something...ah, the good old days)

I feel your pain. I was surprised in the early days of CDs that the titles would always be available from mainstream artists but was blown away by how many discs that I had given to friends as gifts and then later try to purchase them only to discover that they were out of print! I feel your pain...

  36. extraordinarypoems says So sorry. I once had in my possession a Picasso print/drawing -- from the research I did later, it was apparently the real thing, an original. It was passed on to me from a university where I once worked; our department was remodeling, and the print had been on the wall for years and years. Nobody thought it was real, apparently, or even thought to check. I put it away in a closet, not knowing any better, until I could find a place to display it. Then I happened upon similar originals (he did several of this kind of drawing) when I was in Boston at an art gallery and thought, hmm. Needless to say, I gave mine back to the university. But it sure was tempting to sell that baby. They were going for anywhere from a couple of thousand to $15,000 if I remember correctly. Oh, well.

  37. robot-james says Oh I know the pain! Before relocating to the UK I sold my crappy blue bass for $100 that had been in the shed for 10 years. The guy called me after and said - oh by the way, that was a 1962 handmade Burns bass, one of the first made. Great - thanks dude! Thanks for the good read!
