Friday (+/- 1) Discovery: Scissors For Lefty

Posted about 5 years ago
I don't have a lot of time or energy to post a long write-up, but I wanted to call attention to these guys. Two pairs of brothers (and one uncle) based in San Francisco who combine a variety of indie rock and post-punk styles with sardonic and/or soulful lyrics. The Garza brothers are genetically musical, as their mother was a pop star in Malaysia in the 1960's. Bryan Garza's vocals hearken back to David Bowie, Bryan Ferry, the Violent Femmes, Dead Kennedys, I don't know, I've already said I suck at comparing bands... but anyway, they range from almost conversational tones to crooning falsettos. His voice is not smooth and polished, but (or therefore) I like it.This song, _Lay Down Your Weapons_, sets up a bouncy mood, only to shade toward "uh-oh" when the singer says he's just out of jail, leading to an unfortunate denouement with screams of "You're not taking me!" belying the ever-happy rhythms. The SXSW 2006 collection has another great SFL song, which I may post at a later date. The band is playing in Chicago (at Kinetic Playground) on April 6; I doubt I'll be able to go see them, but if you can, give them a listen.
