Something's Gone Wrong Again

Posted over 2 years ago
I always have mixed feelings when I hear a commercial using a song by one of my old favorite artists. On the one hand, I get the smug, superior "I knew this song before it was cool and before it was ever used for marketing" feeling; but on the other hand, I also get the sick, depressed "Oh god, this great song is being used to sell [whatever]" feeling. (Sometimes the choices are just laughable, such as Royal Caribbean using Iggy's _Lust For Life_ -- nothing says fun-time cruise vacation like a song about heroin addiction!) I don't have the same ambivalence toward covers in movie soundtracks. If _Shrek 2_ can introduce a new generation to _Ever Fallen In Love With Someone_, I'm all for it.
But I was brought up way short the other day when I heard _Everybody's Happy Nowadays_ in a commercial for... wait for it... AARP. The juxtaposition of this song, beloved from my college days, with an organization that is linked in everybody's mind with retired people (even though they now say the letters no longer stand for anything... hah!) -- well, that just made me sad. No ambivalence at all. My music has now achieved "old folks' music" status. Gah.

  2. golux13 says Oh, I agree with that. I hope Pete and the lads made some nice coin off this. But I would much rather their music be associated with cool, fun things than the AARP.
