The Great MOG Survey- my responses

I will eventually post an update about the mix I'm making for the middle-age lady I work with, but for now, here's a quick and easy post! Here are my responses to The Great MOG Survey.!

The Great MOG Survey ====================
1. What is the one album you can listen to from start to finish?

There are way more than one, but I'll go with Fever to Tell by the Yeah Yeah Yeahs

2.What is the best album you have purchased in the last six months?

Girl Talk's Night Ripper

3.What album are you looking forward to in the next six months?

I couldn't even tell you what's coming out soon, I learn these things from other MOGgers, most of the time. But I'll say Ani DiFranco because she consistently releases an album per year. :D

4. You have been put in charge of a concert. You are to have three top-billers, of any genre you choose. Who do you get to play?

In a perfect world: CSS, Le Tigre, and Sleater-Kinney

5.If you could have any band that is not currently reunite, reunite who would it be? All band members must be alive.

Sleater-Kinney

6. If you could be one musician for a day, who would it be? Again, the artist needs to be alive.

Beck

7.What band or artist do you wish would quit the music business altogether?

Nickelback

8. What are you currently listening to?

Arctic Monkeys, Girl Talk, Amy Winehouse, The Decemberists, Patti Smith, CSS

9. What is the most embarrassing musical purchase you have ever made for yourself?

The "Place In This World" cassette single by Michael W. Smith. Even in junior high I was horrified when I found out that he's primarily a Christian rock composer. Ew.

10. What musical purchase are you most proud of?

The "Burro" EP by Beck, it's the Spanish version of "Jackass". Love it! :)

Music for a woman who currently only listens to classical and whose young daughters are threatening to listen to rap

My cubicle-mate at work, Sue, is in her late 40s. Her husband plays upright bass in various orchestras in the area for a living. They both pretty much listen exclusively to classical music. They have two daughters, who are in third and fourth grade, respectively. Sue is really worried that the more precocious of the two, Emma, is going to start listening to rap solely because Sue doesn't like it. Sue currently doesn't listen to ANY pop music, or anything other than classical, AT ALL.

Now, I adore hip hop music and I told Sue I'm going to make her a mix of songs by current non-classical bands/artists so that she can slowly start educating herself in the ways of rock/pop/hiphop and thus encourage her daughters to listen to GOOD music, and not the horrible crap they play on top 40 radio.

This is quite possibly the most difficult mix I've ever had to make, and I'm going to be stewing this one in my mind for a while. I am totally open to suggestions that any of you may have!

The songs I'm considering and some reasoning in the comments...

Travelling to Nashville, TN

Aaight people, I work for a company that publishes books for teachers (Heinemann) and one of the biggest conferences that we exhibit at is this weekend (NCTE, National Council of Teachers of English). Though I am but a lowly Marketing Assistant, I am going to be working at this conference.

Here's the deal. It's at the Gaylord Opryland Hotel in Nashville, Tennessee, where, rumor has it, they play country-western music 24/7 EVERYWHERE, including the parking lot.

I am making a playlist specifically for this trip, which is to contain NO COUNTRY music (except perhaps for some Johnny Cash), so that I may endure this trip. It has a lot of hip hop so far. Other than Nashville Pussy and "Tennessee" by Arrested Development, what are some other songs that are either about the city/state, or would help me through my trip?

Traveling Mix CD

My brother is moving out of Maine for the first time in his life. He's visited many other states and a few other countries, but none for any extended period of time. Last week he announced that he is moving to Bozeman, Montana. He's leaving Monday or Tuesday with his dog and whatever he can fit into his car. I'm really proud of him, he's just been stagnating at a bar in Kennebunkport for the past few years being generally immature and treating his girlfriends like shit. He sent me an email saying "I think that it will be a good move for me. I need to get out of maine so bad. Make some new friends and see new places. This town is 30 miles from YellowStone National Park!!! Can you believe that. It also has a 14,000 ft mountain to board all winter. I cant wait." Naturally, I'm excited that he'll be so close to Yellowstone, obviously I will be visiting him. So I made him two mix CDs for his drive that I'd like to share with you all.

The first mix consists of travel-related songs:

1. Shanty for Arethusa by The Decemberists
2. Wilderness by Sleater-Kinney
3. Fantastic Voyage by Coolio (can I just say that I got SO happy listening to this song for the first time in years? It's so catchy!)
4. Miles Away by Yeah Yeah Yeahs
5. Highway to the Danger Zone by Kenny Loggins (we watched Top Gun together many times as kids)
6. Go It Alone by Beck
7. Here I Go Again by Whitesnake (LOVE it)
8. Down Rodeo by Rage Against the Machine (have I mentioned my brother quit his job working at the Tommy Hilfiger outlet to go see Rage with me?)
9. Road to Nowhere by the Talking Heads
10. Paul Revere by the Beastie Boys
11. Rock and Roll McDonald's by Wesley Willis (not entirely travel-related, but there are McDonald's restaurants off of every highway so close enough!)
12. Living On A Prayer by Bon Jovi (our favorite band growing up)
13. Fuck Tha Police by N.W.A. (again, not entirely travel-related but still)
14. Slow Ride by Foghat
15. The Distance by Cake
16. Get Free by the Vines
17. Every State Line by Ani DiFranco

And the second mix is just generally good driving music:

1. Big River by Johnny Cash
2. It Takes Two by Rob Bass
3. Small Town by John Cougar Mellencamp
4. July, July! by the Decemberists
5. Fuck the Pain Away by Peaches
6. Such Great Heights by The Postal Service
7. Glory Days by Bruce Springsteen
8. Sippin' 40oz by GRAVY TRAIN!!!!
9. Tones of Home by Blind Melon
10. I Whupped Batman's Ass by Wesley Willis
11. Private Eyes by Hall & Oates (you have to clap along, it rules)
12. Date With the Night by Yeah Yeah Yeahs
13. Katamari on the Rock- the theme to Katamari Damacy (PS2 game)
14. Blister in the Sun- Violent Femmes
15. Don't Stop Believin' by Journey
16. Pink Moon by Nick Drake
17. Born Slippy by Underworld (LOVE this song)
18. Against All Odds by The Postal Service (we used to listen to the Phil Collins version in the car with my mom as kids)

So I know I probably missed some really obvious travel-related music but I had to come up with this in only a couple of hours and didn't have time for any additional downloading and whatnot.

But what are some great travel-related songs, or great songs to listen to while driving?

I am SO SICK of not having a concert buddy!

So my boyfriend hates concerts. No, I'm not sure how the relationship works either, but it somehow manages to forge on despite this fact. I tried and tried, and finally resigned myself to the fact that he will never get into concerts the way I do. I blame it on his upbringing (not a lot of good music there). He hadn't even gone to a concert before he met me!

Then my two best friends moved far, far away. All of my other friends either A) Have kids and can't find babysitters or B) live across the country. Obviously, I need to make new friends. I understand this.

It really hurt this month when I realized I missed The Decemberists in Boston this past weekend, Peaches back in August, Atmosphere in September, and I can't go see Ani DiFranco in Concord, NH at the end of this week. Yes there are still tickets, but they're in the second-to-last-row and I can't afford to bribe someone to go with me for nosebleed seats (and I've seen her like 15 times already, I lost count). But The Decemberists! That hurt A LOT.

I don't really have a point to this story, I just need some sympathy. :D

I bought the wrong Decemberists CD

I've been holding off on this for a while but I have to come clean: I bought the wrong Decemberists CD.

I had a Barnes & Noble gift card, and though I normally don't buy CDs there, I wanted to use it and I already have about ten books at home that I haven't read yet, so I figured I'd buy the new Beck CD (which I bought the right one of, thanks), and the new Decemberists. The only ones in the bin were Castaways and Her Majesty (which I already have). I didn't have Castaways yet and I remembered that the new album title had a C in it, so I figured that must be it. Um yeah, it's not.

I am embarassed. :D Call it an A.D.D. moment. This also explains why I already had heard most of the album already. I just thought I managed to download a bunch of advance-copy-MP3s! I'm a little slow. Has anyone else ever done something like this? Please tell me I'm not the only one. :D

Worst gift CDs you've received

A teeny bit of backstory: I have a friend who once was obsessed with U2 and similar bands. In college she started dating the man who would later become her husband, a gentleman obsessed with pop-punk (Blink 182 and clones thereof). Since then, my friend has slowly lost her music identity and now only listens to bands that her husband approves of (and he's a misogynist, so none of these include bands who are predominantly female or who have female singers).

So last year for her birthday, I bought her a Le Tigre CD as well as Sleater-Kinney's The Woods album, which I had recently fallen in love with, in the hopes of getting some women back into her music collection.

For Xmas, she bought me a CD by Thursday. I apologize to those of you who like this band, but this is possibly the worst choice of music to give to me. I like weird music, anything new, anything that combines genres and/or has a good beat to it. Mainly indie rock, but a lot of hip hop too, and some pop-ier things. NOT THURSDAY. She told me that she thought I would really like them, because they combined many different genres (sorry, I don't see it). Plus, they swore unneccessarily SO MANY TIMES that they started to sound like the kid in fifth grade who's decided that it's badass to swear and who does it ALL THE TIME. I'm a potty mouth. These things don't usually bother me, but oh lordy, I really did not like this CD.

In her defense, she did also give me a Soviettes CD that I liked, but since they have a female band members, I suspect the only reason I got that one was because her husband didn't approve of it and she wanted to give it away (they get free CDs in the mail all the time).

So my question to you is: what is/are the worst gift CD(s) you've ever received?

Beck's new album

I was a HUGE fan of Beck all through high school and college and up until recently, when I found out that he is a scientologist. I was able to not think about this fact for a couple of years. But this summer I went to see Kathy Griffin and her description of the "religion" had me rolling on the floor laughing at how utterly ridiculous it is. Body-thetans???? Everyone is an alien? And the amount of money celebrities put into it is sick. I could not deny any longer that Beck had totally lost his luster.

But I have EVERY OTHER Beck CD. And I'm still a little curious to see if the album is any good. I was pretty disappointed with Guero. There were a couple of okay songs but it just felt like he was trying to do Odelay again and failing. So I dunno. Has anyone bought The Information? Should I buy it? Thoughts?

Other music players

So I was making a mix CD for a friend today and, I admit, I was very proud of myself and checked my Mog page to make sure it recorded the fabulous songs that I was playing. ALAS! None of them were recorded since they were played on my Creative player, the one that came with my Creative Jukebox Nomad Zen MP3 player. And apparently Mog does not recognize this player. So I tried putting the mix CD back into my computer to play it back and make sure everything sounded A-okay for my friend, and figured NOW Mog would record these beauteous songs. But no, since the song titles and artists didn't record onto the CD, no luck there either. Rats! Is it wrong that I want to create a new playlist in Windows Media Player just so I can share this mix? I mean, it's pretty good in my opinion, but I'm just not sure I want to put that much effort into it. :D

Peaches' new album kicks ass. And really, with a title like Impeach My Bush, how could it NOT kick ass? But seriously, the beats are awesome, it's hilariously raunchy, and I can't stop listening to it. I think it's better than Fatherfucker. If you're a Peaches fan (or a Gravy Train fan), definitely check it out. I'm also excited because since I preordered it I got a free Peaches poster and an Impeach My Bush bumper sticker. I love stickers! :)

Xmas music

Does anyone else find it annoying that when they download a bunch of Xmas music for, say, a Xmas party, that it ends up clogging up your MP3 player so you no longer want to just set the thing on "random"? I did that the other day, in 90 degree heat, and I was none too please to have to listen to Bing Crosby. I wish there was a way to tag that music as Xmas and set up some sort of rule on the MP3 player to only play that music during December. :D
