The Black Brit with Sass

Dame Shirley Bassey is hands-down a timeless performer. This diva found fame in the States with the James Bond themes (Moonraker, Diamonds are Forever, and of course, Goldfinger), but has recorded and performed for over four decades. She is unashamed to belt and let it rim and has a stylistic approach to performance that rivals that of Judy Garland and Barbara Streisand (I purposely leave out Bette Midler). Dame Bassey teamed with the Propellerheads and did this fantastic recording of History Repeating, which I take as a testament to her own staying power in classic vocal standards.

  2. goldneye says Yup.. And a "Damed" one at that! There are actually quite a few compilations of her stuff, in two- or three-disc sets that aren't too expensive. "The Finest Collection" is a two-disc set that is quite concise. It includes fabulous versions of "The Look of Love" and "Can't Take my Eyes off of You," which are kinda funky and forward-looking in style and done differently than any other artists at the time. This also includes some Andrew Lloyd Weber works from his musicals in the 80's... Brits gotta help each other out I guess! Go check it out and enjoy! Peace.
