Summer/Fall Music Festivals

Summer is not really the time to enjoy a day or days of outdoor music when you live in Florida. The summer festival and traveling road shows are best seen a bit further north.

The three I normally keep my eyes on are:

Heavy Rebel Weekender.
There's a definite rock-a-billy vibe to it but the music also includes straight on rock, non-commercial country and punk. It's held in an old courthouse in Winston-Salem with one main stage upstairs and two in the basement. This will be my sixth year and I always have a great time.

Austin City Limits Music Festival
It can be awfully hot in Texas in September but this year's is later in the month which should make for a more pleasant time. One would think this would be a natural choice for me but it looks like I'll be passing it up this year.

Hardly, Strictly Bluegrass.
Some people don't actually grasp the name and think of this event as a bluegrass festival. Not so. This one has got to be my favorite in terms of setting. Golden Gate Park in October is like heaven to this Florida resident. Unfortunately it's on the other side of the country in a city where hotels are not cheap. But we'll see.

What are your favorite biggies for this summer and fall?

Gas prices = Less Live Music ?

A few weeks ago Woodsboss headed into town in their gas guzzling Dodge van. Brian Salvi and I were complaining about gas prices (isn't everyone) and since then I've been wondering what might happen to bands that pay their own way. These are the musicians I normally want to see. Will they hole up at home looking for day jobs? Raise ticket prices and risk losing part of their audience? I sure hope not but what are the alternatives?
Woodsboss on Myspace
5/27/08 -- Yes, the above was a pretty obvious conclusion to draw. From the Chicago Tribune - Road Even Rockier

Artists (Almost) No One Knows #5B

The Wayward Drifters are the country side of J.B's coin and, as is typical of punk and hardcore artists, it's NOT a pop-country side. Plus there's an interesting twist -- this is not a bluegrass band yet one of the major players is Banger Dan (Mazer) on, you guessed it, banjo. Again, this is a DC based band that normally tours outside the region a couple of times a year. They haven't made it to FL yet but I've seen them in NC and TX. If you're into fuck-Nashville country you should give them a listen.

More Wayward Drifters music on Myspace

And if you're a banjo fan, check out Banjer Dan's page
As Dan would say, "Banjos ROCK".

BTW-- My friend Kenneth Brian (soon to be featured)plays electric guitar and does harmony on this track. See what I mean about my "people" intertwining?

Artists (Almost) No One Knows #5A

JB (Beverly) was the first Net-person (Mike Ness Chat) that I met in person (at a bar in DC in January '01). 6 plus years later and it's amazing to me that he, some of the other Ness chat folks, the Hank III crowd and my FL friends have intertwined. My first musical exposure was a demo CD recorded in Detroit between the night I met him and a week later when a group of us met up in Vegas to see Social Distortion. The first time I saw him live was with The Little White Pills, the punk band he formed in DC. It's been a few years since I've seen The Pills play. They've been on hiatus while he's been working with his other project, J.B. Beverly and The Wayward Difters #5B). I miss The Pills but they aren't dead yet so and there's still hope for more music and shows. I can't wait!

There's more LWP music on "Myspace: http://www.myspace.com/thelittlewhitepills2

Another bit of twang from this year's Heavy Rebel Weekender. The first time I saw Hick'ry was at HRW 2006 and was glad to see he was back in 2007. He's one of those real-deal artists from Charlotte. I'd love to see him touring more outside of the Carolinas but, like a lot of other talented musicians, you need to tour to make money but it takes money to tour. I'm not quite sure why I picked this particular song but when I was trying to chose it's the one I kept coming back to.

Find out more about Hick'ry at his Myspace Profile.

Glossary has enlisted a little help from their friends in coordinating the Net release of their new CD, The Better Angels Of Our Nature followed by the hard copy release on October 23. The CD will be hand screened in lots of 200 with each batch done by a different artist. This Tuesday's release will be available from a number of sources including peer-to-peer sites. I'll update this post on Tuesday as I find out where you can get it. Download it and see if you like it. If you do, support the band by purchasing the CD, going to see them when they're in your area, buying their merch and telling your friends. In the mean time, pop up to the search box and enter Glossary or take a look at Glossary MySpace.

Time to go back a few months to the Heavy Rebel Weekender. I saw a number of bands I really liked but The Way-Gonners are probably my favorite new discovery. They're from New Orleans but during their set I was craving a Lone Star and I'm not even a beer drinker. Sounds like good Texas music to me. I'm hoping they play some Florida dates but I'm more likely to catch them in Austin. You can download this and 3 other tracks on MySpace .

Old Age and Music Lovers

No, I haven't reached that point yet (old age that is) but I'm close enough to sometime wonder what will happen to those of use who never really grasped the concept of age-appropriate. I've come up with a few things.

Rock 'n' Roll School for Srs. -- They have it for kids, why not retirees? I'm sure some of us would love a chance to fulfill our teenage guitar-god fantasies. OK, arthritis may prevent us from playing with the speed of an Alvin Lee.

I certainly won't have enough money to keep a young man around to wheel me into clubs. The assisted living facility is going have to provide transportation to more than the grocery store and an occasional matinee. They'll need a driver to make the rounds of local clubs dropping off residents a little after doors and picking them up at closing.

There probably should be online sites where we can exchange information about which hearing aids work best in loud clubs.

If it comes down to a nursing home, another must have will be headphones. Not every resident is going to want to listen to loud, heavy music. Probably should be of the noise-canceling variety to block out the the roommate's TV volume.

Yep, there's a lot more to this getting old business than working with a financial planner.

Artist (Almost) No One Knows #2

I caught "Junkrod Joe and the Cadillac Hearse": http://www.myspace.com/junkrodjoeandthecadillachearse a few years ago at the Heavy Rebel Weekender and now try to catch them when I can. Another Baltimore band that doesn't tour much so that's no easy feat. I saw them along with The Perfect Poor a few weeks ago and had a great time. Joe's getting very proficient on his Gretch and while the show didn't have quite the psychobilly vibe as some of the others it was still great.

Live music is a passion and I've come to prefer seeing shows by lesser-known artists in small clubs. I'm not good at reviews but I still thought I'd begin adding music by some of my favorites.

I'll start with a group I saw a few nights ago, The Perfect Poor. I can't really pick a genre from the list but will add that they introduced themselves by saying they play hillbilly rock-n-roll. I think that's a good description. They toured with three members which put the show solidly in the rock-n-roll category.

Deliberate or random?

I'd be curious to know whether folks' Last Songs or Top Artists are a result of a decision to listen to a particular artist/album or the result of shuffle on their players.

Personally, if I really want to listen to something I pop it into my real stereo. When I'm online it's more a matter of wanting music to go along with what ever else I'm doing on the computer. Same holds true when I'm using my iPod.

Fuzzy Logic

Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. A case in point being that the song "True Believer" by Ronnie Milsap keeps popping up as a recently listened to song. Thing is that I've never heard the song even once. What I've been listening to are tracks by Alejandro Escovedo's old band, The True Believers. It's not the first time I've seen something strange appearing on one of my lists and I'm sure it won't be the last. I may just use this post to chronicle some of them. I'm not complaining, just observing.

A few more of the odder ones:

Children's Chorus -Santa Claus Is Coming To Town And Other Christmas Classics
Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni - Stockholm 1967-04-14

Heavy Rebel Weekender

Heavy Rebel Weekender
http://www.heavyrebel.net/

This year was my fifth trip to Winston-Salem for HRW. It's another chance to hear/see a lot of music from artists that don't come around these parts very often. As the term Weekender implies, it's also somewhat of a scene but in a good way. Not nearly as pretentious as Viva Las Vegas (or so I'm told). It has a heavy rock-a-billy bent but also includes a decent amount of punk, country and just plain rock. I like to hit the merch table and pick up CDs that are either self-produced/distributed or come out in small indie labels. I like my music raw and these fit the bill. I'm lousy at writing reviews but if you are interested here are links to some of the groups I saw. I'm not good at labels either so I "borrowed" them from their respective sites.

F&&K Nashville

I tend to be a pimp for certain unknown artists and this is my first attempt at pimpin' here. Forgive me for looking out for my friends.

It's no secret that the best country music is NOT the music you hear on your local Clear Channel station. Just listen to what comes out of Texas. There are plenty of artists who quietly go on year after year writing and performing good country music. Then there are those who aren't so quiet about it. A case in point is Hank III who has sold F%k Curb Records (his Trashville label) t-shirts on his web site as well as performing under a banner bearing the same sentiment. Collectively these artists can be grouped under a F%k Nashville or F%%k Pop Country category. Along those lines, let me introduce you to three of my friends (well, two friends and a new acquaintance).

First up is J.B. Beverly & The Wayward Drifters. JB is a product of the metro DC area and I first met him in the punk arena. Like a lot of punkers, he also had a country side and The Drifters are a result of that manifestation. You can read and hear him on the Wayward Drifters Web Site or on Myspace. Next up is Kenneth Brian. He was a local boy (I can say boy cuz I'm old) from the northern Gulf Coast of Florida who moved to Nashville and then on to Austin. Check out Kenneth at the Kenneth Brian Web Site or on Myspace. Hick'ry Hawkins is new to me. He's from North Carolina and I first saw him a few weeks ago at the Heavy Rebel Weekender and liked what I heard. Since then I've been trying to spread the news so take a look at his Myspace page.
