i have been a fan of this guy, well, really the Verve for many years now. i saw them at slims in SF in front of a 1/2 full room on the storm in heaven tour i think. it was great. the verve's gtr player is truly one of the best. and let's not forget about the rhythm section. also great. simple. great band. his solo stuff however i go around and around on. 1st solo release: pretty good, grew on me for certain. 2nd: human conditions, also good, but never up to Verve world. the newest one i just haven't been able to fully embrace. more listens perhaps.

  1. Tuff Today, Tuff Tomorrow says hmmm, so should we check him out or not?? its always questionable when a member of a band you really love works on their own projects, its such a game of dice, you never know what could happen....

  3. lemontwist says I really dig Urban Hymns but haven't gotten around to anything else they've released (or any solo stuff). It's a classic case of "this album is so good I'm worried that their other stuff will not live up" syndrome.

  4. geoff stanfield says well. i say yes you should check him out. i would start with the verve stuff to be honest. "storm in heaven", "northern soul" and "urban hymns" are all excellent. all different as well. "storm" is the most spacey and dreamy of the lot and urban hymns is the most poppy, and i use the term loosely. northern soul is there somewhere in the middle of the two. such amazing guitar playing on all of these records. it is patient, not wanky and his tone is incredible. some seriously sexy business. i think richard has since gotten off smack, but like so many bands/artists, his self destruction was to the benefit of the music.
